.m1v file, while older VIVO systems store video as .viv. Converting the file extracts and re-encodes the video into the MPEG-1 format expected by that software.
What the VIV format is
In the Video category, .viv usually identifies video produced by Vivo Software's VIVO/VivoActive streaming-video system and its Producer or Encoder tools. VIV files are encountered in old web archives, CD-ROM presentations, and legacy multimedia collections; they are not a modern general-purpose container.
Support varies by VIV version and by the codec embedded in the file. Current media players may recognize some VIV files but reject others because the format and its decoders are obsolete.
What the M1V format is
.m1v is an MPEG-1 video elementary stream. It stores video without an audio track, subtitles, or the broader metadata structure normally provided by a container such as MPEG program stream.
M1V is useful for older MPEG-1-compatible editors, authoring applications, hardware players, and broadcast or archival workflows that specifically require an elementary video stream. It has wider legacy compatibility than VIV, but MPEG-1 compression is less efficient than current codecs and the conversion is normally lossy.
How to actually convert VIV to M1V
For a one-off conversion without installing software, use the VIV-to-M1V converter on 101convert.com, upload the VIV file, select M1V as the output, start the conversion, and download the resulting file.
For local batch processing, use FFmpeg if the installed build includes a VIV demuxer and decoder:
- Install a current FFmpeg build and place the source file in an accessible folder.
- Check whether FFmpeg can read the file with
ffprobe -v error -show_streams input.viv. - Convert the video-only stream with
ffmpeg -i input.viv -an -c:v mpeg1video -f mpeg1video output.m1v. - Open
output.m1vin the target application and verify its frame rate, dimensions, and playback.
The -an option discards audio because M1V does not contain an audio stream. If the source has multiple video streams, select one explicitly, for example with -map 0:v:0.
If FFmpeg reports that the input format or codec is unsupported, open the file with the original VIVO/VivoActive software and export it to an intermediate format such as AVI, if that installation provides an export function. Then convert the intermediate video with ffmpeg -i intermediate.avi -an -c:v mpeg1video -f mpeg1video output.m1v.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
- Conversion decodes the VIV stream and re-encodes it as MPEG-1, so lost detail cannot be restored and a second generation of compression artifacts may appear.
- The output contains no audio. Preserve the original VIV if its soundtrack is needed, or create a separate audio file for a workflow that can mux audio later.
- M1V is an elementary stream; some players expect an MPEG-1 program stream with an
.mpgextension instead. Do not simply rename the file unless the receiving software explicitly accepts raw M1V. - Old VIV files can use unusual frame rates, dimensions, or damaged headers. A successful conversion may still require matching the output frame rate and resolution to the target device.
- The conversion can produce a larger file than the source because VIV may use more efficient or more aggressively compressed storage than MPEG-1.
