Free online VIV to 3GP converter

Older VivoActive video files may not open in current phones, editors, or messaging applications that expect 3GP. Converting them creates a smaller, widely recognized mobile-video file for playback, sharing, or use on legacy 3G devices.

What the VIV format is

VIV usually identifies VivoActive video, an obsolete streaming-oriented format associated with Vivo Software and the VivoActive Player. Files commonly contain low-resolution video encoded with older Vivo or H.263-related codecs and may include a separate legacy audio stream. You are most likely to encounter .viv files in archived websites, old camera or phone software, downloaded streaming clips, and collections created on Windows systems before modern MP4 support became common.

Not every file ending in .viv uses exactly the same codec combination. Inspect the file before conversion if a tool reports an unsupported stream or produces video without audio.

What the 3GP format is

3GP is a multimedia container designed for space- and bandwidth-limited mobile networks. It commonly stores H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 video with AMR-NB or AAC audio. Older feature phones, basic media players, and some legacy editing applications support 3GP more reliably than VIV.

3GP is useful when the destination device expects a small mobile-video file. Its low bitrate and restricted resolutions reduce file size, but it is not a preservation format and usually provides less quality than modern MP4 using H.264 video.

How to convert VIV to 3GP

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the VIV-to-3GP converter on 101convert.com.
2. Choose the .viv file and select 3GP as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .3gp file when processing finishes.
4. Test the output on the intended phone or player; legacy devices may require a specific resolution, frame rate, or audio codec.

This option requires no installed conversion software. Keep the original VIV file because a conversion cannot restore detail removed by the target bitrate.

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg can read many VivoActive files when its build includes the VIV demuxer and the required legacy decoder. Place the input file in a working folder, open a terminal there, and run:

This produces a small 176×144 file suitable for many older phones. Change -s 176x144 to 128x96 for devices with stricter limits, or omit the option to retain the decoded source dimensions. Use a higher -b:v value for better detail at the cost of a larger file.

For phones that specifically require H.263 video and AMR-NB audio, use an FFmpeg build containing the relevant encoders:

If FFmpeg reports that it cannot detect the input format, find a build with Vivo/VIV demuxing support or use the converter on 101convert.com. If it reports a missing AMR encoder, use the AAC command or install an FFmpeg build compiled with libopencore_amrnb.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Converting to 3GP does not improve the source. VIV files are often already low resolution and heavily compressed, so a second lossy encode can introduce blocking, blurred motion, and audio artifacts. Preserve the original file and use the lowest conversion count possible.

3GP is a container, not one fixed codec specification. A file may have the .3gp extension yet fail on a particular phone if it contains AAC or MPEG-4 instead of the device's required AMR-NB and H.263 combination. Check the device manual for supported frame size, frame rate, video codec, audio codec, and maximum bitrate, then adjust the FFmpeg options accordingly.
