How to convert mpeg to 3gp file

  • Video

Older mobile phones, 3G video players, and some messaging applications accept 3GP but reject MPEG files. Converting can also reduce the resolution and bitrate enough for basic playback or transfer on devices with limited storage or bandwidth.

What the MPEG format is

MPEG is a family of video and audio standards, not one specific codec or container. Files with .mpg or .mpeg extensions commonly contain MPEG-1 video from VCD-era media or MPEG-2 video from DVDs, television captures, camcorders, and older editing systems.

MPEG program streams may contain different video, audio, frame-rate, and resolution combinations. VLC, FFmpeg, DVD-authoring applications, older camcorders, and video editors commonly create or use them. The filename extension does not reveal the actual codecs, so inspect the source with MediaInfo or ffprobe when device compatibility matters.

What the 3GP format is

3GP is a multimedia container specified by the Third Generation Partnership Project for mobile networks and phones. It can contain H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, or H.264 video and AMR-NB, AMR-WB, or AAC audio, depending on the 3GP version and the target device.

3GP is useful for legacy handsets because its typical device profiles use small frames, low bitrates, low frame rates, and mono audio. Common older-phone dimensions include 176×144 and 320×240. The 3GP container does not automatically make a video smaller; the reduction comes from choosing less demanding codecs, dimensions, frame rates, and bitrates. Modern smartphones usually support MP4 more reliably, so 3GP is mainly appropriate when a particular device or application requires it.

How to convert the file

Using 101convert

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the .mpg or .mpeg file, select 3GP as the output format, start the conversion, and save the resulting file. For confidential videos, very large files, or batch jobs, a local converter avoids uploading the source.

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg provides control over the codecs and limits required by older phones. Install it, open a terminal in the source-file folder, and run this general-purpose command:

ffmpeg -i input.mpg -c:v libx264 -profile:v baseline -level 3.0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -vf "scale=320:240:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=320:240:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2" -r 15 -c:a aac -b:a 64k -ar 16000 -ac 1 output.3gp

Replace input.mpg with the actual filename. This creates a 320×240, 15-frame-per-second file using baseline H.264 and mono AAC. H.264/AAC 3GP output works on some later 3G devices, but it is not the safest choice for the oldest handsets.

For a device limited to older 3GPP capabilities, try MPEG-4 Part 2 video at a smaller size:

ffmpeg -i input.mpg -c:v mpeg4 -vtag mp4v -vf "scale=176:144" -r 12 -b:v 120k -c:a aac -b:a 32k -ar 8000 -ac 1 output.3gp

Some legacy phones require AMR-NB audio instead of AAC. If the installed FFmpeg build provides the encoder, replace the AAC options with:

-c:a libopencore_amrnb -b:a 12.2k -ar 8000 -ac 1

Run ffmpeg -encoders to check available encoders. If the target device documentation specifies a codec, maximum resolution, frame rate, or file size, use those values instead of the general-purpose settings.

Quality and compatibility limits

Re-encoding cannot restore detail already lost in the MPEG source. Reducing the frame size or bitrate lowers quality, but it is usually necessary for older phones and produces a smaller file. Keep the original MPEG file as the archive and treat the 3GP file as a device-specific copy.

A .3gp extension does not guarantee compatibility: the phone may reject the video codec profile, audio codec, sample rate, dimensions, frame rate, or file size. If playback fails, inspect the output with MediaInfo or ffprobe and compare every parameter with the device manual. Test the converted file on the target device before deleting the source.
