How to convert mpeg to mkv file

  • Video

A media player, editing workflow, or archive may require an MKV container for selectable audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and metadata. Converting an older MPEG recording can provide that structure, and direct stream copying can preserve its original quality without re-encoding.

What the MPEG format is

MPEG refers to a family of video and audio compression standards created by the Moving Picture Experts Group, not one specific container. Files ending in .mpg or .mpeg commonly contain MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video in an MPEG program stream, often with MP2 or AC-3 audio.

MPEG files are common on Video CDs, DVDs, digital television recordings, older camcorders, set-top boxes, broadcast recorders, and legacy video-editing systems. The filename extension does not identify the exact codecs or streams, so inspect unusual files with MediaInfo or ffprobe before converting.

What the MKV format is

MKV, formally Matroska Video, is an open container format that can hold video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, attachments, and metadata in one file. It is frequently used for archived video, multilingual releases, screen recordings, and files requiring selectable subtitle or audio tracks.

MKV is a container, not a codec. It does not automatically improve picture quality or reduce file size. Its main advantage in this conversion is flexible track and metadata support; compatible MPEG streams can often be placed in an MKV file without re-encoding.

Convert with FFmpeg without re-encoding

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop method when the existing video and audio codecs are suitable for MKV. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the source-file folder, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.mpg -map 0 -c copy output.mkv

Replace input.mpg with the actual filename, using quotation marks around names that contain spaces. -map 0 includes all detected streams, and -c copy copies them without decoding or recompressing them.

To inspect the source first, run:

ffprobe input.mpg

If copying every stream causes an error, select only the required streams:

ffmpeg -i input.mpg -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -map 0:s? -c copy output.mkv

The optional ? allows the command to continue when the source has no audio or subtitle stream. Stream copying is normally fast because it changes the container rather than processing every video frame.

Convert with the online converter

For a one-off conversion without installing software, upload the file to the free converter on 101convert.com, select MKV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Check applicable file-size and retention limits before uploading private or very large recordings.

Re-encode when compatibility requires it

Some televisions, car stereos, mobile devices, and hardware players accept MKV only with specific codecs, commonly H.264 video and AAC audio. If a remuxed file is rejected or has playback problems, re-encode it with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i input.mpg -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mkv

For H.264, CRF values around 18–23 are common; lower values produce larger files and generally retain more detail. Re-encoding is slower, can change the file size substantially, and cannot restore detail already lost in the MPEG source.

HandBrake provides a graphical alternative for this re-encoding workflow. Open the file with File → Open Source, choose MKV in the Summary tab, select the required video, audio, and subtitle settings, choose the destination, and click Start Encode. HandBrake normally transcodes rather than performing a no-recompression remux, so use FFmpeg or the online converter when preserving the original streams is the priority.

Quality and compatibility limits

Remuxing with -c copy preserves the original compressed quality because no video or audio re-encoding occurs. The output size usually changes only slightly because of MKV metadata and container overhead.

MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video and MP2 audio can be valid inside MKV, but software and hardware support varies. A device that supports MKV may still reject those codecs, require H.264/AAC, or fail to handle particular subtitle or audio formats.

Damaged MPEG program streams may contain discontinuous timestamps, incorrect duration data, or audio-sync errors. If the remuxed file jumps, reports the wrong length, or loses synchronization, test a re-encode instead of applying timestamp corrections blindly.

Keep interlaced MPEG recordings interlaced when the playback system handles interlacing correctly. For a progressive-only destination, deinterlace during re-encoding with a filter such as -vf bwdif; deinterlacing does not apply to a stream-copy conversion.
