Free online MK3D to MKV converter

A media player, editor, or hardware device may accept .mkv but reject the .mk3d extension. Remuxing the file creates an MKV-named output while normally preserving the original video, audio, subtitles, chapters, and stereoscopic metadata without re-encoding.

What the MK3D format is

MK3D is a filename extension for a Matroska container intended for stereoscopic 3D video. The container can hold video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, attachments, and track metadata describing layouts such as side-by-side, top-and-bottom, or frame-sequential presentation.

MK3D files are used in 3D disc backup workflows, stereoscopic video production, and Matroska authoring. The extension does not define a separate video codec: the file may contain AVC/H.264, HEVC, MVC, or another codec supported by Matroska and the playback device.

What the MKV format is

MKV is the general-purpose filename extension for Matroska video files. Matroska supports codecs such as H.264, H.265/HEVC, AV1, VP9, and MPEG-2, plus multichannel audio, subtitles, chapters, cover art, and attachments.

MKV is recognized by more media players, editors, media servers, and hardware devices than MK3D. An MKV output can still contain stereoscopic video; changing the extension does not automatically convert 3D content to 2D.

Remux with MKVToolNix

1. Install the current MKVToolNix package for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
2. Open MKVToolNix GUI → Multiplexer and add input.mk3d.
3. Review the video, audio, subtitle, chapter, and attachment tracks. Keep the video track's stereoscopic settings unchanged unless the source metadata is wrong.
4. Set the destination filename to output.mkv.
5. Click Start multiplexing.

This is a remux: MKVToolNix copies the encoded streams into a new Matroska file instead of decoding and re-encoding them. It normally preserves the source quality, chapters, subtitles, attachments, and stereoscopic track metadata.

Use mkvmerge from the command line

For a straightforward remux, run:

mkvmerge -o output.mkv input.mk3d

Inspect the input and its track properties first when necessary:

mkvmerge -J input.mk3d

Use a different output directory if the source and destination names would conflict. Add or exclude tracks with the usual mkvmerge options if the output should contain only selected streams.

Use FFmpeg when needed

FFmpeg can remux compatible streams without transcoding:

ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0 -c copy output.mkv

-map 0 selects all input streams and -c copy disables re-encoding. MKVToolNix is usually the better choice for Matroska work because it exposes track, chapter, attachment, and stereoscopic metadata more directly.

Renaming versus remuxing

MK3D and MKV are both Matroska containers, so simply renaming input.mk3d to output.mkv may be enough when an application rejects only the extension. Renaming does not modify the container, validate the file, repair metadata, or change track selection.

Use MKVToolNix or mkvmerge when the receiving program requires a newly written MKV file, when tracks need inspection or selection, or when the source has container-level compatibility problems.

Quality and compatibility limits

Remuxing is lossless for the encoded streams and is much faster than transcoding, but it cannot make an unsupported codec, 3D layout, or MVC stream compatible with a player. Transcode only when the target device rejects the source codec or requires a different resolution, bitrate, or pixel format.

Some players use the filename extension to decide whether to enable 3D playback. If the MKV is treated as ordinary 2D video, inspect the video track's stereoscopic properties in MKVToolNix and verify that the player supports the stored layout. Frame-sequential video, MVC, DRM-protected sources, malformed files, and damaged disc backups may require specialized software or may remain unusable after remuxing.

Online conversion is generally unsuitable for MK3D: files are large, uploads expose private media, services may impose size limits, and many transcode instead of remux, potentially discarding stereoscopic metadata. Use an online service only if it explicitly supports MK3D, documents stream-copy or 3D metadata preservation, and meets your privacy requirements; for most files, local MKVToolNix is safer.
