Free online MK3D to MP4 converter

Devices, browsers, and editing applications often accept MP4 but do not recognize the Matroska-based .mk3d extension. Converting it produces a more widely supported file for playback, editing, sharing, or storage.

What the MK3D format is

MK3D is a filename extension for a Matroska 3D video. It uses the Matroska container and can store stereoscopic video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and 3D-related metadata such as the stereo mode.

You may encounter MK3D files from 3D Blu-ray ripping workflows, stereoscopic video authoring, or Matroska multiplexing tools such as MKVToolNix. Some applications create a normal .mkv file instead, even when the content is 3D; the extension alone does not determine whether a file contains usable stereoscopic metadata.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a widely supported multimedia container used by phones, televisions, web browsers, game consoles, and video editors. H.264 video with AAC audio offers particularly broad compatibility, while H.265/HEVC can reduce file size on devices that support it.

MP4 is suitable when a device rejects MK3D, an editor requires MP4 input, or a video needs to be shared without Matroska-specific playback support. MP4 can carry some stereoscopic arrangements, but conversion does not guarantee that every 3D flag from Matroska will be preserved.

How to convert MK3D to MP4

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install a current FFmpeg build, open a terminal in the folder containing the source file, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4

Replace input.mk3d with the actual filename. The command selects the first video stream, includes available audio, re-encodes video to H.264, and converts audio to AAC. Use a higher CRF value such as 22 for a smaller file or a lower value such as 16 for less compression.

If the source already contains MP4-compatible codecs and you do not need to alter the 3D metadata, try stream copying first:

ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0 -c copy output.mp4

Stream copying is fast and avoids generational quality loss, but it can fail when the source uses unsupported codecs, subtitles, or container features. If it fails, use the re-encoding command instead.

Using 101convert

Upload the MK3D file, select MP4 as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes. For private or very large 3D files, desktop conversion avoids uploading the source.

Quality, compatibility, and 3D limitations

Changing the container does not improve the original image quality. Re-encoding with H.264 introduces another generation of compression; -c copy avoids that loss when the streams are compatible.

Check the result with a media player that supports your intended 3D layout. Side-by-side and top-and-bottom video may remain visually intact, but Matroska stereo-mode metadata can be lost during MP4 muxing. If the output appears squeezed, doubled, or flat, select the correct 3D layout manually in the player or editor.

For maximum playback compatibility, use H.264 video, AAC audio, and yuv420p. Preserve the original MK3D file because a converted MP4 may omit chapters, subtitles, alternate audio tracks, or stereoscopic flags.
