What the MK3D format is
MK3D is the Matroska 3D video container, using the Matroska structure associated with the .mkv family but carrying stereoscopic video metadata or multiple eye views. It can contain H.264, HEVC, MPEG-4, lossless audio, subtitles, chapters, and other streams. MK3D files are commonly produced with MKVToolNix or exported by 3D-capable video authoring and encoding software; you may encounter them in stereoscopic video archives and downloaded 3D recordings.
What the M2T format is
M2T generally means an MPEG-2 transport stream, especially the 1080i or 720p format used by HDV camcorders and compatible editing systems. It is useful when a device or editor accepts MPEG-2 transport streams rather than Matroska files. M2T supports stream-oriented storage, error-resilient transmission, time stamps, and standard MPEG-2 video and audio, but it normally produces a larger file than modern H.264 or HEVC encoding at comparable visual quality.
How to actually convert MK3D to M2T
FFmpeg is the most practical desktop tool because it can read Matroska containers and write MPEG transport streams. Install a current FFmpeg build, then inspect the source streams:
ffmpeg -i input.mk3d
Convert the first video and first audio stream to a broadly compatible MPEG-2 transport stream:
ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 25M -maxrate 25M -bufsize 17825792 -c:a mp2 -b:a 384k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.m2t
The ? suffix on the audio map makes audio optional; remove the extra space if copying the command literally as -map 0:a:0?. The 25 Mbps video rate and 48 kHz audio match common HDV-style requirements, but the receiving device may require a different resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio codec, or transport-stream profile.
For a video-only source, use:
ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 25M -f mpegts output.m2t
If the MK3D contains separate left- and right-eye video streams, inspect FFmpeg's stream list and select the required one with -map 0:v:0 or -map 0:v:1. You can also convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software.
Quality and compatibility limitations
MK3D's stereoscopic metadata and multi-view arrangement are not guaranteed to survive in M2T. A normal MPEG-2 transport stream can carry video streams, but M2T does not by itself define one universal 3D layout; many conversions therefore output only the selected eye view and discard 3D tags, alternate views, chapters, and subtitles.
Because MPEG-2 is usually not compatible with the source codec, FFmpeg re-encodes the video and causes generation loss. Keep the original MK3D, and match the target device's exact frame size and frame rate; HDV hardware commonly expects 1440×1080 or 1280×720 rather than arbitrary source dimensions. Test the resulting file with the intended editor or device before converting a large collection.
