MK3D files are commonly converted when a Blu-ray, AVCHD player, video editor, or authoring application accepts M2TS but does not recognize Matroska 3D. The conversion can also prepare a 3D video for disc-oriented storage, although container conversion alone does not guarantee that stereoscopic 3D or Blu-ray compatibility will be preserved.

What the MK3D format is

MK3D is the Matroska video extension for stereoscopic 3D content. It uses the Matroska container, so the file can hold video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, attachments, and stereo-mode metadata in one file.

MK3D files are typically produced by Blu-ray 3D ripping or remuxing tools, MKVToolNix, and command-line tools such as FFmpeg when a Matroska file is saved with 3D-related metadata. You may encounter them in downloaded 3D video libraries, archival copies, and computer-based media players. The video inside may use side-by-side, top-and-bottom, frame-sequential, or MVC stereoscopic encoding; the .mk3d extension alone does not identify which method is used.

What the M2TS format is

M2TS is an MPEG-2 Transport Stream container used by Blu-ray video, AVCHD camcorders, and some broadcast or disc-authoring workflows. Blu-ray structures normally store clips as .m2ts files inside a BDMV directory, while a standalone M2TS file can also be used without a complete disc structure.

M2TS supports transport-stream multiplexing, Blu-ray-oriented video and audio codecs, timestamped packets, and long recordings. It is useful when a hardware player, editing program, or authoring tool expects an MPEG transport stream instead of Matroska. A file with an .m2ts extension is not automatically a valid Blu-ray title; Blu-ray compliance also depends on codecs, bitrates, stream layout, playlists, and disc metadata.

How to actually convert MK3D to M2TS

For a normal video stream that FFmpeg can decode, use FFmpeg to remux or transcode the file:

  1. Inspect the streams and codecs with ffprobe input.mk3d. Check whether the video is AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265, MVC, side-by-side, or top-and-bottom, and identify the desired audio and subtitle streams.
  2. Try a direct remux first if the codecs and stream layout are suitable: ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts output.m2ts This changes the container without recompressing audio or video.
  3. If direct remuxing fails or the target device rejects the result, transcode to broadly supported Blu-ray-style streams: ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 -b:a 640k -f mpegts output.m2ts
  4. Open output.m2ts in the target player or authoring application and verify frame rate, aspect ratio, audio, subtitles, and 3D behavior. Use the application’s Import or Add video command rather than changing the extension manually.

For a Blu-ray workflow, use tsMuxeR after preparing compatible elementary streams. It can multiplex supported AVC, HEVC, audio, and, where properly supported, MVC streams into an M2TS-based Blu-ray structure. It does not make an arbitrary MK3D file Blu-ray 3D compliant simply by renaming or remuxing it. The built-in converter at 101convert.com can also process the file online for free without installing software, subject to the site’s upload limits and supported codecs.

Quality, compatibility, and 3D limitations

Remuxing with -c copy preserves encoded quality because no decoding and re-encoding occurs. Transcoding with libx264 loses some quality and can take substantially longer, but it produces a stream that more players recognize.

The main limitation is stereoscopic preservation. MK3D metadata, MVC dependent views, and Matroska stereo flags may not survive an ordinary MPEG-TS conversion. FFmpeg may decode only the primary view from an MVC source, while side-by-side or top-and-bottom video usually remains a single frame containing both views and requires the playback device to know how to interpret it. Inspect the output with ffprobe output.m2ts and test it on the specific 3D player.

Subtitles and attachments are particularly problematic: M2TS does not provide a general equivalent for Matroska attachments, and subtitle codecs accepted by Matroska may not be accepted by Blu-ray hardware. Blu-ray authoring may require converting subtitles to PGS and restructuring the output into BDMV folders rather than using one standalone M2TS file.
