What the MK3D format is
MK3D is the stereoscopic-video variant of the Matroska container. It can hold video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and stereoscopic layout metadata, including side-by-side, top-and-bottom, and other 3D presentation modes. The file normally uses the .mk3d extension, although some applications store the same Matroska content under .mkv.
MKVToolNix, particularly mkvmerge, can create MK3D files by multiplexing compatible video and setting the stereoscopic flags. 3D disc-ripping workflows may also produce them. VLC, Kodi, MPC-HC, and other Matroska-capable players can open them, but support for MVC 3D video and automatic 3D display selection varies by player and hardware.
What the MPEG format is
MPEG usually refers to an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video file using the MPEG Program Stream container, commonly saved as .mpg or .mpeg. MPEG-2 is supported by many televisions, DVD-era players, broadcast tools, and older editing applications.
MPEG-2 is less space-efficient than H.264 or H.265, but it offers predictable compatibility and straightforward decoding. An MPEG file is normally a two-dimensional output; the MPEG container does not preserve every Matroska stereoscopic flag or MVC-specific feature.
How to convert MK3D to MPEG
FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install a current FFmpeg build, open a terminal in the folder containing the source file, and inspect its streams first:
ffmpeg -i input.mk3d
For a broadly compatible MPEG-2 Program Stream, use the first video and first audio stream:
ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpeg output.mpg
-q:v 3 selects high MPEG-2 quality; use a larger value such as 5 or 6 to reduce the output size. For a fixed bitrate required by a particular device, replace it with settings such as -b:v 6000k -maxrate 8000k -bufsize 1835k. Remove -map 0:a:0? when the source has no audio, or select another track with a stream specifier such as -map 0:a:1.
To convert only the video to MPEG-1 for very old hardware, use:
ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg1video -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -b:a 160k -f mpeg output.mpg
You can also use the built-in converter on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Select the MK3D file, choose MPEG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes.
Quality, compatibility, and 3D limitations
- Re-encoding from a compressed MK3D stream to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 loses detail and usually increases file size. There is no general lossless conversion when the target must be conventional MPEG video.
- If the MK3D contains side-by-side or top-and-bottom 3D, selecting the video stream normally preserves both views as a combined frame, but MPEG playback will not necessarily identify or display that frame as stereoscopic content.
- MVC-based 3D may not be decoded by the installed FFmpeg build. If FFmpeg reports an unsupported codec or fails to expose a usable video stream, the source must first be decoded by a 3D-capable application, and the result exported as side-by-side, top-and-bottom, or ordinary 2D video.
- Subtitles, chapters, attachments, and Matroska menu data are not carried into a standard MPEG Program Stream. Burn subtitles into the video or export them separately before conversion if they are required.
- Check the output on the intended device. Some MPEG players require MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio, a specific frame rate, or a restricted bitrate rather than any file merely bearing the
.mpgextension.
