What the MK3D format is
MK3D is a Matroska container variant used for stereoscopic 3D video. It can contain video encoded with codecs such as H.264 or H.265, along with audio, subtitles, chapters, and Matroska 3D layout metadata. Files are commonly produced by Blu-ray 3D ripping or remuxing tools such as MakeMKV and mkvmerge, then played by VLC, mpv, and compatible home-theater software.
The .mk3d extension describes the container and 3D presentation metadata, not a particular video codec. Inspect the actual streams and stereo arrangement before converting.
What the M1V format is
M1V is an MPEG-1 video elementary stream. It stores video only, without the audio, subtitles, chapters, or container metadata available in MK3D. It is used by older MPEG-1 players, authoring systems, embedded devices, and workflows that expect a separate video stream rather than a complete media container.
M1V offers broad compatibility and relatively simple decoding, but MPEG-1 normally produces larger files and lower quality than modern codecs at the same bitrate. If audio is required, an M1V file must usually be multiplexed with an audio stream into an MPEG program stream such as an MPG file.
How to actually convert MK3D to M1V
FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. It reads Matroska containers and encodes the selected video stream with its MPEG-1 video encoder.
- Install FFmpeg and verify that the source is readable with
ffprobe input.mk3d. - Encode the first video stream and discard audio with:
ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -an -c:v mpeg1video -q:v 3 -f mpeg1video output.m1v
-map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream, -an removes audio because M1V is video-only, -q:v 3 requests a relatively high MPEG-1 quality level, and -f mpeg1video explicitly selects the elementary-stream output format.
For a device with fixed MPEG-1 requirements, set the frame size, frame rate, and bitrate explicitly. For example:
ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -an -vf scale=720:480 -r 29.97 -c:v mpeg1video -b:v 2500k -f mpeg1video output.m1v
Replace 720:480 and 29.97 with the target device's permitted NTSC or PAL values. If the source has a different aspect ratio, use a scale-and-pad filter instead of stretching it. On 101convert.com, you can also convert the file for free without installing software; select MK3D as the source and M1V as the output when those options are available.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Converting from MK3D to M1V removes Matroska metadata and normally discards audio, subtitles, chapters, and 3D signaling. MPEG-1 has no standard equivalent for the source container's stereoscopic metadata, so the resulting file may remain visually side-by-side or top-and-bottom without telling the playback device how to separate the views.
If the MK3D source uses side-by-side or top-and-bottom packing, preserve that layout by encoding the complete frame. If the target expects one eye only, crop the desired half before encoding, for example with -vf crop=iw/2:ih:0:0 for the left half of a side-by-side frame. Cropping or rearranging 3D views is source-specific and should be checked with a short test output.
Use ffprobe output.m1v to confirm that the result contains an MPEG-1 video stream. Do not use a remux-only command such as -c copy; MK3D and M1V are structurally different, and MPEG-1 encoding is required.
