Some DVD authoring tools, broadcast workflows, and legacy editors accept only MPEG-2 elementary video streams with the .m2v extension. Converting an MK3D file can provide a compatible video-only stream, but the process may discard audio and stereoscopic information.
What the MK3D format is
MK3D is a Matroska 3D video container, normally identified by the .mk3d extension. It stores stereoscopic video together with Matroska metadata describing how the left and right views are arranged; the actual video codec may be H.264, MVC, or another codec supported by the container.
You may encounter MK3D files after using MakeMKV to back up 3D Blu-ray content or MKVToolNix to package stereoscopic video. The extension describes the container and 3D presentation, not a single mandatory compression format.
What the M2V format is
M2V is an MPEG-2 video elementary stream. It contains video only, without audio, subtitles, chapters, menus, or container metadata. Audio is normally kept in a separate stream such as .ac3, .mp2, or .wav and multiplexed later during DVD authoring or another MPEG-2 workflow.
M2V is useful when a legacy authoring application requires MPEG-2 video, when a production system accepts elementary streams, or when video and audio must be encoded and synchronized separately. It is less suitable for general playback because it lacks the indexing and metadata provided by a container such as MPEG-TS or Matroska.
How to convert MK3D to M2V
FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. First inspect the file and its streams:
ffprobe -hide_banner input.mk3d
Convert the first video stream to MPEG-2 and omit audio:
ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -an output.m2v
The -map 0:v:0 option selects the first video stream, -c:v mpeg2video selects MPEG-2 video encoding, and -an prevents audio from being included. Lower constant-quality values generally produce higher quality and larger files; use an explicit bitrate when the authoring system has a fixed specification:
ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 8000k -maxrate 9000k -bufsize 1835008 -an output.m2v
For a DVD-oriented output, set a compatible frame size and frame rate instead of assuming the source already matches them. For example, an NTSC workflow can use:
ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -vf "scale=720:480,fps=30000/1001" -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 6000k -flags +ildct+ilme -an output.m2v
Use the equivalent PAL dimensions and frame rate when required by the destination system. Check that system's maximum bitrate, interlacing, GOP, and aspect-ratio requirements before encoding.
If you do not want to install software, upload the file to the free converter on 101convert.com and choose M2V as the output format. The service may impose file-size, codec, or 3D compatibility limits that do not apply to a local FFmpeg conversion.
Quality and compatibility limitations
The conversion is a lossy transcode when the source is not already MPEG-2. Raising the bitrate cannot restore detail lost in the MK3D source; use the highest bitrate permitted by the target authoring workflow and avoid repeated re-encoding.
An M2V file cannot preserve MK3D's Matroska container data, audio, subtitles, chapters, menus, or stereoscopic layout. With an MVC or other 3D source, FFmpeg may decode only the compatible base view, may fail if the codec lacks decoder support, or may require a separate 3D-to-2D extraction step. The resulting M2V should therefore be treated as a 2D video stream unless the destination system explicitly supports the chosen MPEG-2 3D arrangement.
To retain audio, extract it separately before authoring, for example with ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:a:0 -c:a copy audio.ac3 when the source audio codec is suitable. Do not expect the resulting .m2v file to play with sound by itself.
