What the BIK format is
BIK is the file extension for Bink Video, a proprietary codec developed by RAD Game Tools and widely used for cutscenes, menus, and other prerecorded video in PC and console games. Game publishers typically create BIK files with RAD Video Tools; players encounter them in game installation folders or extracted game assets. A BIK file can contain video and, depending on the Bink version and source, associated audio.
What the M2V format is
M2V is an MPEG-2 elementary video stream. It contains video only, with no audio, subtitles, menus, or container metadata. DVD authoring applications, broadcast workflows, and some older editing systems use M2V because MPEG-2 video has established profile, bitrate, frame-rate, and interlacing options. Audio must be supplied as a separate file, commonly MPEG audio, AC-3, or WAV, according to the target application.
How to actually convert BIK to M2V
Using FFmpeg
FFmpeg is the most direct desktop method when the installed build includes a Bink decoder. Open a terminal in the folder containing the source and run:
ffmpeg -i input.bik -an -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -f mpeg2video output.m2v
-an removes audio because M2V cannot contain it, -c:v mpeg2video selects MPEG-2 video encoding, and -q:v 2 requests high quality using FFmpeg's variable-quality mode. Replace the quality setting with a bitrate when the destination requires a fixed specification, for example:
ffmpeg -i input.bik -an -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 6000k -maxrate 8000k -bufsize 1835k -f mpeg2video output.m2v
Set the frame size, frame rate, interlacing mode, and bitrate to match the DVD or hardware specification rather than assuming the BIK properties are suitable. Use ffprobe input.bik to inspect the source before encoding.
Using RAD Video Tools as an intermediary
If FFmpeg reports that the Bink stream or version is unsupported, install RAD Video Tools, open the file through File → Open, and use its conversion option to create an AVI or another broadly supported intermediate video. Then encode that intermediate with FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i intermediate.avi -an -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -f mpeg2video output.m2v
RAD Video Tools is useful for decoding Bink files, but the final MPEG-2 elementary-stream encoding is generally easier to control with FFmpeg.
Using the built-in online converter
You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the BIK file, select M2V as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting elementary video stream. Check the output's frame rate, dimensions, and playback before using it in authoring software.
Quality and compatibility limitations
The conversion decodes Bink and re-encodes the frames as MPEG-2, so it is lossy and cannot restore detail discarded by the original Bink encode. M2V does not preserve Bink audio; extract or convert the audio separately if the original soundtrack is needed. Some DVD authoring tools require specific MPEG-2 dimensions, field order, frame rate, GOP structure, and bitrate, and may reject a technically valid M2V that does not meet those constraints. Bink files from games can also use unusual dimensions or frame rates, requiring scaling or frame-rate conversion before authoring.
