BIK files commonly contain game video that cannot be opened by standard editors or playback devices. Converting the video stream to MJPEG makes it usable in editors, legacy hardware, and workflows that require frame-based JPEG compression.

What the BIK format is

BIK is the filename extension used by Bink Video, a proprietary game-video format developed by RAD Game Tools. Game developers use it for cutscenes, menus, loading screens, and other prerecorded sequences because Bink supports integrated video and audio with relatively low playback requirements.

BIK files are created by RAD Video Tools and are commonly found inside PC and console game installation folders, archives, or disc images. A BIK file may contain Bink Video 1 or Bink Video 2 data, and its audio stream may use a codec associated with the game rather than a standard consumer format.

What the MJPG format is

MJPG, or Motion JPEG, stores video as a sequence of independently compressed JPEG frames. Unlike inter-frame codecs, it does not depend on preceding or following frames, so individual frames can be decoded and edited without reconstructing a GOP.

MJPEG is useful for editing, frame extraction, capture systems, older hardware, and applications that support JPEG-based video but not Bink. Its main disadvantages are larger files and lower compression efficiency than modern codecs such as H.264 or HEVC. MJPG may be stored as a raw MJPEG stream with an .mjpg extension or inside an AVI container, commonly as .avi.

How to actually convert BIK to MJPG

FFmpeg is the most practical desktop tool when it can decode the particular Bink variant. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

  1. Install FFmpeg and place the BIK file in a folder that is easy to access.
  2. Open a terminal or Command Prompt in that folder.
  3. For a widely compatible AVI containing MJPEG video, run:
ffmpeg -i input.bik -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.avi

Replace input.bik with the actual filename. The -q:v 3 setting gives high visual quality; lower values generally produce better quality and larger files, while higher values reduce quality and file size. The -an option removes audio because a raw MJPEG target does not define a universal audio format.

If the receiving application specifically requires an elementary MJPEG stream with an .mjpg extension, use:

ffmpeg -i input.bik -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an -f mjpeg output.mjpg

For a free conversion without installing software, use the converter on 101convert.com: select the BIK file, choose MJPG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result.

If FFmpeg reports that the BIK codec is unsupported, open the file with RAD Video Tools, which is the original Bink software suite. Export the video to an intermediate format that FFmpeg can decode, then encode that intermediate file with the command above.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The conversion cannot restore detail lost in the original Bink encoding. MJPEG re-encodes every frame, so repeated conversions can introduce JPEG blocking and increase the file size; use a single conversion and retain the original BIK as the archival source.

AVI with MJPEG is usually more compatible than a raw .mjpg stream because AVI provides frame-rate, resolution, and codec metadata. Some programs accept only specific pixel formats or frame rates, so inspect the source with ffprobe input.bik and match those values if the target device rejects the default output.

BIK audio is not preserved by the commands above. If the result must include audio, use an AVI container and choose a compatible audio codec, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.bik -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi

PCM audio substantially increases the AVI size, and some BIK audio streams may not decode even when the video does.
