.3gp container with codecs supported by older phones, messaging systems, or other video software.
What the BIK format is
BIK is the filename extension used by RAD Game Tools’ Bink Video format. Game developers commonly package pre-rendered cutscenes, introductions, menu animations, and other video sequences as .bik files inside PC and console games.
Bink files can contain Bink Video 1 or Bink Video 2 streams and may use Bink’s associated audio formats. They are usually encountered in a game installation rather than in general-purpose media libraries. Standard media players and mobile devices often cannot decode them.
What the 3GPP format is
3GPP, usually stored with the .3gp extension, is a multimedia container designed for cellular networks and mobile phones. It can contain MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.264 video and AAC or AMR audio, although older phones often expect MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 video with AMR audio.
Its relatively simple structure and modest bitrate requirements made 3GP practical for older handsets, MMS attachments, and early mobile-video applications. Modern players can generally open 3GP files, but newer devices may provide better compatibility with MP4.
How to actually convert BIK to 3GPP
Try FFmpeg first if your build includes a Bink decoder. It can decode the Bink stream and transcode it into codecs accepted by a 3GP container:
ffmpeg -i input.bik -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg4 -b:v 500k -vf scale=320:-2 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 64k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f 3gp output.3gp
-c:v mpeg4selects MPEG-4 Part 2 video, which is more compatible with older 3GPP devices than many modern codecs.-vf scale=320:-2reduces the video to a common mobile resolution while preserving its aspect ratio; use a smaller value such as176:-2for very old phones.-c:a aaccreates AAC audio. Replace it with an AMR encoder when the target handset specifically requires AMR.-map 0:a:0?makes the audio stream optional, so conversion can proceed when the BIK file contains video only.
If FFmpeg reports that it cannot decode the file, use RAD Video Tools, the software distributed by the Bink format’s developer, to open the BIK file and export or convert it to an intermediate AVI file. Then transcode that file with FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i intermediate.avi -c:v mpeg4 -b:v 500k -vf scale=320:-2 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 64k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f 3gp output.3gp
On 101convert.com, you can convert the file for free without installing software. Select the BIK file, choose 3GPP or 3GP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file.
Quality and compatibility limitations
This is a transcoding operation, not a container-only change. The Bink video and audio must be decoded and re-encoded, so the 3GP file cannot preserve the original quality perfectly. Increase the video bitrate when quality matters, or reduce it when file size and mobile transfer speed matter more.
Older phones may reject files that use AAC, high resolutions, stereo audio, or unsupported frame rates even when the file extension is correct. For those devices, use a device-specific profile such as 176×144 or 352×288 video, a low frame rate, MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 video, and AMR-NB mono audio if the available encoder supports it.
Bink files may contain multiple audio tracks, unusual frame rates, or no audio. The sample command selects the first video and first audio stream; inspect the input with ffmpeg -i input.bik and adjust the stream mappings when the file contains different tracks.
