What the BIK format is
BIK is the filename extension used by Bink Video, a proprietary video format developed by RAD Game Tools. Game studios use it for cutscenes, introductory movies, menus, and other prerecorded sequences because Bink combines video and audio in a file designed for real-time playback.
BIK files are created with RAD Video Tools or the Bink SDK and are usually found inside installed game directories or extracted game archives. They may use different Bink generations, so support can vary between decoders. A BIK file is not normally a camera or general-purpose video recording.
What the XVID format is
Xvid is an implementation of the MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile video codec. It is commonly stored in an AVI container, so an output named video.avi may contain Xvid video rather than using .xvid as its extension.
Xvid provides much smaller files than uncompressed video and remains compatible with many older televisions, DVD players, media boxes, and Windows applications. H.264, H.265, and newer codecs usually provide better compression, but Xvid is still appropriate when the receiving device specifically requires MPEG-4 Part 2 or an AVI file.
How to actually convert BIK to XVID
FFmpeg is the most practical desktop tool when it includes both a Bink decoder and the Xvid encoder.
- Install an FFmpeg build that provides Bink decoding and
libxvidencoding. - Open a terminal in the folder containing the source file.
- Run this command, replacing the filenames as needed:
ffmpeg -i input.bik -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libxvid -vtag XVID -q:v 4 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 3 output.avi
The command selects the first video stream, includes audio when present, encodes video with Xvid, and uses MP3 audio for broad AVI compatibility. Lower -q:v values generally produce higher video quality and larger files; values around 3–5 are a practical starting range. If the FFmpeg build lacks libxvid, install a build compiled with that encoder or use a desktop application that exposes the installed Xvid codec.
To check whether the required components exist, run ffmpeg -decoders and ffmpeg -encoders; look for a Bink decoder and libxvid. If FFmpeg cannot open the BIK file, try RAD Video Tools, choose Convert a file, and select an AVI output using the installed Xvid video codec. You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software, if its BIK and XVID conversion option is available.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
This conversion is a lossy transcode: the original Bink video is decoded and then compressed again as Xvid, so it cannot improve source quality. Keep the original BIK file for archival use and test the AVI on the target device before converting a large batch.
AVI has limited support for modern features. Multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapter data, variable frame-rate behavior, or unusual Bink audio streams may not transfer correctly. The -map 0:a? option includes only the first audio stream by default through the command’s stream selection; inspect the source with ffprobe input.bik if it contains several tracks. Some game BIK files use versions or wrappers unsupported by current FFmpeg builds and may require the RAD tools distributed with the relevant game or SDK.
