What the BIK format is
BIK is the filename extension for Bink Video, a proprietary lossy video format developed by RAD Game Tools for real-time playback in games. Game developers use it for opening movies, cutscenes, menus, credits, and other prerecorded sequences; you usually encounter BIK files inside a game's installation or resource folders.
Bink files can contain video and one or more audio streams. Different Bink generations and game-specific encodings are not always supported equally by media players, so a BIK file that plays in its original game may fail in general-purpose software.
What the DIVX format is
DIVX generally refers to video encoded with the DivX implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2, usually stored in an AVI-compatible container and commonly identified with a .divx or .avi extension. It was designed for relatively small files and playback on older computers, DVD players, and media devices that support DivX or the compatible MPEG-4 ASP profile.
DivX is useful when the target player does not support Bink, H.264, or modern MP4 formats. It is an older codec, so it is not a good choice for current devices that already support H.264 or H.265.
How to actually convert BIK to DIVX
FFmpeg is the most practical desktop option when the installed build includes Bink decoding. It can decode the BIK stream and encode an AVI file with the DIVX FourCC:
- Install a current FFmpeg build and verify that it recognizes the source with
ffmpeg -i input.bik. - Run:
ffmpeg -i input.bik -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -vf format=yuv420p -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DIVX -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k -f avi output.divx
-q:v 4 provides a quality-based MPEG-4 encode; use a higher value for a smaller file and a lower value for better quality. format=yuv420p improves compatibility with older DivX hardware. The optional audio mapping prevents failure when the BIK file has no audio stream.
If the target software rejects the .divx extension, create output.avi instead, confirm that it plays, and rename it to output.divx only if the receiving application requires that suffix. If FFmpeg reports that it cannot decode the BIK file, use RAD Game Tools' Bink Video tools to open the file and export an AVI intermediate, then encode that AVI with the FFmpeg command above. You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
This is normally a lossy-to-lossy conversion: Bink has already compressed the original video, and MPEG-4 Part 2 compresses it again. Keep the original BIK file and avoid repeated conversions. The output cannot restore detail discarded by the Bink encoder.
DivX output may have different frame-rate, aspect-ratio, subtitle, or audio behavior from the game version. Check the FFmpeg input report for the source dimensions and frame rate; unusual dimensions may need scaling to even values, for example -vf "scale=trunc(iw/2)*2:trunc(ih/2)*2,format=yuv420p". Some BIK files contain multiple audio tracks or game-specific metadata that an AVI/DivX file cannot preserve.
For modern playback, H.264 in an MP4 container is usually more compatible and smaller at comparable quality, but it is not equivalent to DIVX and may not work on legacy DivX-certified hardware.
