A BIK video usually needs conversion when it must be edited in standard video software or authored as a Video CD. VCD requires MPEG-1 video with specific frame sizes, frame rates, audio settings, and disc structure, so changing the extension alone is not sufficient.

What the BIK format is

BIK is the Bink video format developed by RAD Game Tools for compressed video in PC, console, and mobile games. Game cutscenes, menus, trailers, and other packaged cinematic sequences commonly use .bik files. RAD Video Tools creates and plays Bink files, while FFmpeg can decode many Bink variants.

What the VCD format is

Video CD is an optical-disc standard rather than a single ordinary video extension. A compliant VCD uses MPEG-1 video at 352×288 pixels and 25 fps for PAL, or 352×240 pixels and approximately 29.97 fps for NTSC, with 44.1 kHz MPEG audio. The encoded stream is normally stored on the disc as AVSEQ01.DAT; a disc image may contain .bin and .cue files.

VCD is useful for older standalone DVD/VCD players and legacy playback hardware. Its low resolution and fixed bitrate make it widely compatible with that equipment, but unsuitable for preserving modern HD quality.

How to actually convert BIK to VCD

FFmpeg is the most direct command-line option when it recognizes the Bink variant. Install a current FFmpeg build, place the BIK file in a working folder, and use the preset matching the intended television standard.

For PAL:

ffmpeg -i input.bik -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -vf "scale=352:288,setsar=1" -target pal-vcd output.mpg

For NTSC:

ffmpeg -i input.bik -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -vf "scale=352:240,setsar=1" -target ntsc-vcd output.mpg

The -target preset applies VCD-compatible MPEG-1 encoding, bitrate, frame rate, audio, and multiplexing settings. If the BIK file has no audio stream, remove -map 0:a:0; some players may still expect an audio track.

To create a Video CD disc image from the encoded stream, use VCDImager:

vcdimager --type=vcd2 -c output.cue -b output.bin output.mpg

Burn the resulting cue/bin image with disc-authoring software that supports cue sheets. Do not burn output.mpg as an ordinary data file if the player requires a genuine VCD structure.

If FFmpeg reports that the Bink codec or version is unsupported, open the file in RAD Video Tools, export it to an intermediate format such as AVI, then run the resulting video through the FFmpeg commands above. You can also convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software, but confirm that its output is VCD-compliant before burning a disc.

Quality and compatibility limitations

This conversion is lossy twice: Bink is decoded and then re-encoded as low-bitrate MPEG-1. Scaling a small game video to 352-pixel VCD dimensions does not add detail, and unusual Bink features such as multiple audio tracks, alpha channels, subtitles, or game-specific metadata may be discarded.

Choose PAL or NTSC according to the target player and source timing. A VCD-ready MPEG file is not the same as a finished VCD; the authoring step is required to create the disc directories, filesystem, and .DAT track structure.
