We don’t have a dedicated online converter for MP4 to VCD yet, but you can convert MP4 files online to these and more formats:

How to convert mp4 to vcd file

  • Video

Source format: MP4

MP4 is a common digital video container used for streaming, sharing, and playback on modern devices. It can hold video, audio, subtitles, and metadata, and it often uses codecs such as H.264 or H.265.

MP4 is widely supported and is usually the best choice for modern playback. If you only need to watch a video on current devices, converting away from MP4 is often unnecessary.

Target format: VCD

VCD stands for Video CD, an older disc format designed for legacy CD-based players. A VCD does not mean a simple .vcd video file in the way .mp4 is a file extension. In practice, creating a VCD usually means producing MPEG-1 video that follows VCD rules and then authoring it onto a CD.

Standard VCD video uses 352×240 at 29.97 fps for NTSC or 352×288 at 25 fps for PAL, with MPEG-1 video and compatible audio settings. VCD is largely obsolete, but it can still be useful for older standalone players or specific archival needs.

What to expect

MP4 to VCD is a major downgrade in quality and flexibility. The resolution is much lower than typical MP4 sources, widescreen video may need letterboxing or cropping, and modern features such as subtitles, chapters, and high-definition detail are not preserved.

Because VCD is a legacy format, compatibility depends on the target player and region. Always confirm whether the device expects NTSC or PAL output before converting.

How to convert MP4 to VCD-compatible output

The most practical desktop options are FFmpeg for command-line conversion and VLC media player for a simple graphical workflow. For creating a true VCD disc structure, use a disc-authoring tool such as VCDImager. DVDStyler is mainly for DVD authoring, so it is not the best choice for VCD creation.

  1. Install VLC media player or FFmpeg.
  2. If using VLC, open Media → Convert / Save, add your .mp4 file, then choose Convert / Save.
  3. Select or create an MPEG-1 profile that matches VCD requirements. Use 352×240 for NTSC or 352×288 for PAL, and choose compatible audio settings such as MP2.
  4. Save the output as .mpg or .mpeg. This gives you VCD-compatible video, but not a finished VCD disc.
  5. If you need a real VCD, use VCDImager to author the MPEG file into a VCD image or disc structure, then burn it to a CD-R.

With FFmpeg, you can create VCD-compatible MPEG output directly. Example commands:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -target pal-vcd output.mpg

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -target ntsc-vcd output.mpg

These commands create VCD-style MPEG-1 output, but they do not build the full VCD disc layout by themselves.

Online converters

Some reputable online converters can transcode MP4 to MPEG-1, but many do not support true VCD authoring. If you use an online service, check that it offers a VCD or MPEG-1 preset, and avoid uploading private or sensitive videos.

For a true VCD disc, desktop software is usually the safer and more reliable option.

Best choice for most users

If you need a file for legacy playback, convert MP4 to VCD-compatible MPEG-1 first, then author it as a disc if required. If you only need modern playback, keep the file in MP4 instead.
