  • Video

VSDC Free Video Editor requires a .vproj project when you need to reopen and continue editing an MP4 rather than deliver a finished video. The process imports the MP4 into VSDC and saves an editable project; it does not convert the video stream into another playback format.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container commonly holding H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio. Phones, cameras, screen recorders, streaming tools, video editors, and software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and OBS Studio commonly create or export MP4 files.

An MP4 normally contains finished audio and video streams, not the timeline, cuts, transitions, effects, and project settings needed to reconstruct an edit. It is intended for playback, distribution, or import into an editor.

What the VPROJ format is

.vproj is the proprietary project format used by VSDC Free Video Editor on Windows. It stores the project timeline, editing instructions, object positions, effects, transitions, and project settings; it is not a universal video container.

VPROJ is useful for continuing work in VSDC because edits remain adjustable without changing the original MP4. The project normally references the source media by its file location, so a VPROJ file alone may not contain everything required to reopen the project. Ordinary media players cannot play it, and other editors generally cannot open it as an editable project.

How to create a VPROJ from an MP4

  1. Install VSDC Free Video Editor from the official VSDC website. VSDC is a Windows application; use a version compatible with your Windows installation.
  2. Open VSDC and select New project, or open an existing VSDC project.
  3. Import the video with Import content or by dragging the .mp4 file into the project workspace. Select the required MP4 and confirm the import settings.
  4. When creating a new project, set its resolution and frame rate to match the source where appropriate. This avoids unnecessary scaling or frame-rate conversion during later export, although it cannot restore quality already lost in the MP4.
  5. Make any required cuts, transitions, effects, audio changes, or other edits. VSDC records these operations in the project while using the MP4 as source media.
  6. Save the project with File → Save project as and use a name such as my-video.vproj.
  7. Keep the .vproj file and the imported MP4 in a stable folder. If the source is moved, renamed, or deleted, VSDC may report missing media when the project is reopened. For transfer or archiving, copy all referenced video, audio, images, fonts, and other project assets together.

Converters and export options

There is no reliable online MP4-to-VPROJ converter. Online conversion services create encoded media files such as MP4, WebM, or MOV; they cannot reproduce VSDC's proprietary editable timeline. FFmpeg and other media tools likewise process audio and video streams, not VSDC project structures.

Use VSDC itself as the desktop conversion tool. After editing, choose the appropriate export workflow in VSDC when you need a playable delivery file; export settings determine the output container, codec, resolution, frame rate, and compression. Changing an existing file's extension to .vproj does not convert it.

Quality and compatibility limits

Importing an MP4 into VSDC does not improve its resolution, codec, frame rate, or compression. Quality loss generally occurs when the edited timeline is rendered again, depending on the selected export codec and bitrate. Repeatedly exporting and re-importing compressed video can compound that loss.

A VPROJ project is tied to VSDC and may depend on the VSDC version, installed fonts, external assets, and source-file paths. If the recipient uses another editor, provide the original MP4 and, when necessary, an exported delivery video rather than expecting that editor to open the VPROJ as a project.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting MP4 to VPROJ reduce the video quality?

No, creating a VPROJ project does not re-encode or change the original MP4. Quality is only affected later when the project is exported, depending on the chosen video settings.

Will my MP4 become fully editable after converting it to VPROJ?

The MP4 is added as a source clip in an editable project, but its original video content remains flattened into one clip. You can edit the clip and add project elements, but you cannot recover separate layers, frames, or source effects that were not in the MP4.

Is a VPROJ file a playable video like an MP4?

No, a VPROJ file is an editing project rather than a finished video. It must be opened in compatible editing software and exported to a video format for normal playback or sharing.

Why does my VPROJ project say the MP4 is missing?

This usually happens because the project refers to the original MP4 rather than replacing it with a self-contained copy. Moving, renaming, or deleting the source video can break that reference, so the file must remain available at the expected location or be relinked.
