How to convert mp4 to amv file

  • Video

Older Actions-chipset portable players and some low-cost media devices accept video only as AMV. Converting an MP4 creates a low-resolution, device-compatible copy; keep the original MP4 for normal playback, editing, and archival.

MP4 and AMV formats

.mp4 is an ISO Base Media File Format container used by phones, cameras, video editors, streaming downloads, and web services. It can contain different video codecs, including H.264, H.265/HEVC, or MPEG-4 Part 2, plus AAC or other audio, subtitles, and metadata; the extension alone does not guarantee that two MP4 files use the same codecs or settings.

AMV, usually expanded as Actions Media Video, is a proprietary video format used by many older portable players based on Actions Semiconductor chipsets. It was designed for limited processors, small displays, and low storage capacity. AMV video is normally paired with adpcm_ima_amv audio, uses low resolutions and frame rates, and produces relatively small files.

Common AMV profiles include 128 × 128 or 160 × 120 video, 12–15 fps, and 22.05 kHz mono audio. These settings are useful only when the target device requires them; AMV is lossy and unsuitable as an editing or preservation format.

Converting with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most dependable desktop option because it includes an AMV video encoder, AMV muxer, and compatible IMA ADPCM audio encoder. Install a current build from ffmpeg.org, an operating-system package manager, or a trusted platform-specific distributor.

  1. Check the player manual, bundled conversion software, or existing AMV files for the required resolution, frame rate, filename pattern, and destination folder.
  2. Place the source video in a simple working folder and name it input.mp4.
  3. Run this command for a conservative 160 × 120, 15 fps profile:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "scale=160:120:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=160:120:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2" -r 15 -c:v amv -pix_fmt yuvj420p -q:v 3 -c:a adpcm_ima_amv -ar 22050 -ac 1 output.amv

The scale-and-pad filter preserves the source aspect ratio and adds black borders instead of stretching the image. -q:v 3 selects relatively high AMV quality; higher values reduce file size and image quality. Replace both 160 and 120 with the exact dimensions required by the player.

Convert a short clip first, copy output.amv to the device, and test it there. A file that opens on a computer can still fail on the player because legacy firmware may impose stricter limits.

Desktop and online alternatives

If the player was supplied with an AMV converter, use that utility or its documented profile first: it may apply model-specific dimensions, frame rates, and file naming rules. For a graphical Windows option, Format Factory provides AMV output through Video → AMV; confirm its output resolution, frame rate, and audio settings before starting the conversion. Download it only from its publisher or a trusted software repository.

For small, non-sensitive files, CloudConvert and Convertio are established online services that may offer AMV when selected in their current output-format menus. Check the selected profile after conversion, because an AMV file with unsupported dimensions or audio settings may not play on the target device. Upload limits, account quotas, and each service's privacy policy apply.

Compatibility and quality limits

Use the device's native display resolution. Encoding 640 × 480 video for a 160 × 120 player adds no visible detail, increases file size, and can exceed the device decoder's limits.

If video fails to play, retry with the documented resolution and 12 or 15 fps. If audio is absent or distorted, retain -c:a adpcm_ima_amv -ar 22050 -ac 1; many AMV players cannot decode AAC or MP3 audio inside an AMV file.

Devices sold as AMV players do not necessarily accept identical files. Firmware may limit dimensions, frame rate, duration, storage location, or filenames, so preserve the MP4 source and use the exact profile that succeeds on the specific player.
