Some older portable media players accept AMV but cannot play Blu-ray or AVCHD footage stored in M2TS files. Converting requires decoding the source video, reducing it to the player’s supported dimensions and frame rate, and encoding AMV-compatible audio and video.

What the M2TS format is

M2TS is a Blu-ray BDAV transport-stream container, usually containing H.264/AVC or H.265/HEVC video with AC-3, E-AC-3, DTS, or PCM audio. Blu-ray discs, AVCHD camcorders, Blu-ray authoring programs, and some video recorders create M2TS files. You commonly encounter them in a disc’s BDMV/STREAM folder or after copying footage from an AVCHD camera.

The extension identifies the container, not a single codec or quality level. Some M2TS files are interlaced, use surround sound, or contain multiple audio and subtitle streams. Commercial Blu-ray files may also be encrypted; conversion requires lawful access to an unencrypted copy.

What the AMV format is

AMV is a low-resolution video format used mainly by older inexpensive MP4 players and handheld media devices. It normally combines an AMV video stream with IMA ADPCM audio in an AMV-compatible container.

Its small files and low decoding requirements suit limited hardware, but AMV is not a general-purpose archival format. Common device profiles use dimensions such as 160×120, 176×144, 208×176, or 320×240, with supported frame rates and audio settings varying by model. Check the player’s manual before choosing output settings.

How to convert M2TS to AMV

For a local conversion, FFmpeg is the most controllable option. First verify that the installed build includes the required codecs:

ffmpeg -encoders | grep -E 'amv|adpcm_ima_amv'

On Windows, replace grep with a search in the encoder list, or run ffmpeg -encoders and inspect the output. Convert a source to a common 160×120 player profile with:

ffmpeg -i input.m2ts -vf "scale=160:120:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=160:120:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2" -r 25 -c:v amv -c:a adpcm_ima_amv -ar 22050 -ac 1 output.amv

This command preserves the aspect ratio by adding borders, sets 25 frames per second, and converts audio to mono 22.05 kHz IMA ADPCM. Replace 160:120 and -r 25 with the exact dimensions and frame rate supported by the player. If the device requires a different audio rate or stereo audio, change -ar or -ac accordingly.

To avoid borders and fill the entire display, crop after scaling instead:

ffmpeg -i input.m2ts -vf "scale=160:120:force_original_aspect_ratio=increase,crop=160:120" -r 25 -c:v amv -c:a adpcm_ima_amv -ar 22050 -ac 1 output.amv

Some FFmpeg builds lack AMV encoding support or produce files that a particular player rejects. In that case, use the player manufacturer’s AMV conversion utility, if available, and match its documented profile. You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software; select the M2TS input, choose AMV as the output, and download the resulting file.

Quality and compatibility limitations

AMV output is substantially smaller and lower quality than typical M2TS footage because the target devices generally impose low resolution, low bitrate, limited frame rates, and compressed mono audio. Downscaling cannot preserve Blu-ray detail, and converting interlaced footage may produce combing unless deinterlacing is enabled.

For interlaced camera footage, add a deinterlacing filter before scaling, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.m2ts -vf "yadif,scale=160:120:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=160:120:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2" -r 25 -c:v amv -c:a adpcm_ima_amv -ar 22050 -ac 1 output.amv

Test a short clip on the intended player before converting a long recording. AMV implementations are not uniform: a file can be valid according to FFmpeg yet fail because the device expects a particular resolution, frame rate, audio format, filename convention, or storage layout.
