A TS recording may need conversion when a low-cost MP3/MP4 player accepts only its AMV video format. AMV targets the small screens and limited decoding hardware of those devices, so the conversion usually requires reducing resolution, frame rate, and audio complexity.

What the TS format is

TS is the MPEG-2 Transport Stream container, identified by the .ts extension. It carries one or more packetized video, audio, subtitle, and metadata streams, with error-tolerant structure designed for broadcast and streaming rather than ordinary file storage.

You encounter TS files in DVB, ATSC, IPTV, satellite, and cable recordings, Blu-ray transport streams, digital-TV capture software, and some security or professional video systems. The video inside may use MPEG-2, H.264/AVC, or H.265/HEVC, while the audio may use MPEG audio, AAC, AC-3, or another broadcast codec. The extension alone therefore does not specify the actual video codec or dimensions.

FFmpeg, VLC, broadcast recording applications, and video capture software can read or create TS files. A damaged recording may contain several programs or incomplete timing information, which can affect conversion.

What the AMV format is

AMV is a proprietary, highly constrained video format used mainly by inexpensive MP3 and MP4 players, especially older models with small LCD screens. AMV files normally contain low-resolution MPEG-4-derived video and simple MP3 audio in a device-specific container.

Its main advantage is compatibility with hardware that cannot decode standard MP4, AVI, H.264, or modern audio codecs. Common device profiles use dimensions such as 160x120, 160x128, or 128x96, with low frame rates and modest audio sampling rates. AMV is unsuitable for archival copies, modern editing, large screens, or high-quality playback.

AMV support is inconsistent: two players using the .amv extension may require different dimensions, frame rates, audio settings, or encoder variants. Use the conversion utility supplied for the target player whenever possible.

How to convert TS to AMV

Using the player’s AMV converter

  1. Check the player manual or bundled software for its required AMV resolution, frame rate, audio sample rate, and maximum file size. Install the device’s AMV utility, often supplied as “AMV Converter” or within “MP3 Player Utilities.”
  2. Open the utility and choose Add file, Input, or the equivalent command. Select the TS recording.
  3. Choose the player’s exact profile. If no profile exists, set the documented screen size, usually 12–20 frames per second, MP3 audio, and the required output extension .amv.
  4. Set an output folder, start the conversion, and copy the resulting AMV file to the player using its storage or media-transfer software.
  5. Test the file on the device. A file that plays on a computer but fails on the player usually violates the device’s resolution, frame-rate, audio, or file-size limits.

Preparing an intermediate AVI with FFmpeg

Some older AMV utilities do not decode TS directly. FFmpeg can first create a small AVI that the AMV program can import:

ffmpeg -i input.ts -vf "scale=160:120:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=160:120:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,setsar=1" -c:v mpeg4 -vtag xvid -q:v 5 -r 15 -c:a libmp3lame -ar 22050 -ac 2 -b:a 64k intermediate.avi

Replace 160:120 and 15 with the target player’s documented values. Open intermediate.avi in the AMV converter, select the matching device profile, and export an .amv file. This FFmpeg command creates an intermediate AVI, not a standards-compliant AMV file; FFmpeg builds generally do not provide a universal AMV encoder.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. The output may still require adjustment for a particular player’s AMV profile, so verify the resulting resolution, frame rate, audio settings, and playback on the device.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion to AMV is normally lossy twice: the source is decoded from its original TS streams, then resized and encoded again for the player. Keep the TS as the master copy and use a smaller crop or padded image only for the AMV version.

Transport streams often contain interlaced broadcast video, while AMV players generally expect progressive frames. Deinterlace during preparation when the source shows comb-shaped motion artifacts; an FFmpeg filter such as yadif can be added before scaling. Preserve the source aspect ratio with padding rather than stretching faces or subtitles.

AMV devices commonly reject files with unsupported dimensions, variable frame rates, H.264 video, AAC audio, long filenames, or large capacities. If the AMV utility reports an invalid input, demultiplex or transcode the TS to a simple AVI first and confirm that the source contains a playable video stream rather than only broadcast metadata or an encrypted recording.
