TS recordings often come from broadcast systems, TV tuners, and video cameras, while phones, browsers, editors, and many playback devices more commonly accept H.264 video in an MP4 file. Converting the recording can reduce compatibility problems and, when re-encoded, reduce its size.

What the TS format is

TS usually means MPEG Transport Stream, a container designed to carry video, audio, subtitles, and program data in packets. Its error-resilient structure suits digital television, satellite and cable broadcasts, IPTV, Blu-ray streams, and recordings made by TV capture software.

TS files can contain different video codecs, including MPEG-2 and H.264, so the .ts extension does not identify the codec by itself. Broadcast receivers, network recorders, VLC, FFmpeg, and capture applications commonly create or save this format. You may encounter separate files for broadcast segments or a single file containing multiple programs and audio tracks.

What the H.264 format is

H.264, also called AVC, is a video codec rather than a complete container format. It compresses video efficiently and is supported by most web browsers, televisions, phones, game consoles, and editing applications. H.264 video is commonly stored in an MP4 file with AAC audio, although it can also be placed in other containers such as MKV or TS.

For general playback and sharing, .mp4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is usually the most compatible target. H.264 is lossy: re-encoding an existing H.264 stream reduces quality, while changing only the container can preserve the original video exactly.

How to convert TS to H.264

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suitable when you need control over codecs, quality, audio tracks, subtitles, and container settings. First inspect the source:

ffprobe input.ts

To encode the video as H.264 and the audio as AAC in a broadly compatible MP4 file, run:

ffmpeg -i input.ts -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf ese 23 -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.mp4

The command above contains a typo if copied literally; use this command instead:

ffmpeg -i input.ts -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.mp4

-crf 18 to -crf 23 controls quality and size; lower values produce larger files with less visible loss. -preset slow usually improves compression at the cost of encoding time, while -preset fast finishes sooner. Remove -c:a aac -b:a 160k and use -c:a copy only when the source audio codec is supported by the MP4 target.

If inspection shows that the TS already contains H.264 video and compatible audio, avoid re-encoding and remux it:

ffmpeg -i input.ts -map 0 -c copy -movflags +faststart output.mp4

Remuxing is much faster and does not reduce video quality, but it can fail when the source contains codecs, subtitles, or broadcast metadata that MP4 does not support. In that case, select the required streams with -map or re-encode incompatible streams.

Using VLC

VLC can perform a basic transcode without command-line tools. Open Media → Convert / Save, add the TS file, choose Convert / Save, select a profile containing H.264 video and AAC audio, set a destination ending in .mp4, and start the process. FFmpeg provides more predictable control over quality, stream selection, interlacing, and subtitles.

Converting without installing software

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Choose an H.264/MP4 output if the site offers separate container and codec choices, and avoid uploading recordings that contain confidential or copyrighted broadcast material unless you have permission.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A TS file may contain interlaced broadcast video. For progressive playback, deinterlace during encoding, for example with -vf yadif; this changes the image and should not be enabled automatically when the source is already progressive. To retain the original frame rate and dimensions, do not add scaling or frame-rate options.

Some broadcasts contain multiple audio languages, teletext, subtitles, or several programs. -map 0 copies all detected streams, but MP4 players may handle them inconsistently. Use explicit mappings such as -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -map 0:s:0? when you need one video, one audio track, and an optional subtitle stream.

H.264 encoding cannot restore quality lost in the original broadcast. If the source is already H.264, remuxing is preferable; transcoding is justified only when changing resolution, bitrate, audio format, deinterlacing, or compatibility.
