Video editors, players, and devices that accept only raw H.264 may require a transport-stream recording to be converted to a .264 elementary stream. The conversion can also reduce compatibility overhead, but a raw .264 file normally carries video only and has no container for audio, subtitles, or metadata.
What the TS format is
TS is an MPEG transport stream container designed for continuous delivery of audio and video, especially over unreliable or broadcast networks. Digital television systems such as DVB and ATSC, TV tuners, surveillance recorders, broadcast encoders, cameras, OBS, and FFmpeg commonly create or capture .ts files.
A TS file can contain H.264/AVC, MPEG-2 Video, HEVC, AAC, AC-3, subtitles, and multiple program streams. The .ts extension identifies the container, not the video codec, so the source codec must be checked before conversion.
What the 264 format is
A .264 file usually contains a raw H.264/AVC elementary video stream. It is not a full container like MP4 or Matroska: it normally has no audio track, subtitle stream, chapter data, or reliable metadata.
Raw H.264 is useful for encoder testing, broadcast and embedded-video workflows, hardware decoders, and software that explicitly requests Annex B H.264 data. Its compact encoding and broad decoder support are advantages, but ordinary media players and editors generally handle H.264 more reliably inside .mp4 or .mkv.
How to convert TS to 264
FFmpeg is the most predictable desktop tool for this conversion. First inspect the streams:
ffprobe input.ts
If the video stream is already H.264, extract it without re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i input.ts -map 0:v:0 -c:v copy -f h264 output.264
This preserves the encoded video and avoids quality loss. It discards audio and other streams because a raw .264 output is intended for video data only.
If the TS contains MPEG-2, HEVC, or another codec, encode the video as H.264:
ffmpeg -i input.ts -map 0:v:0 -an -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -f h264 output.264
-crf 20 provides high quality at a moderate bitrate; use a higher value for a smaller file and a lower value for less compression. Replace input.ts and output.264 with the actual filenames.
For a no-install conversion, the free converter on 101convert.com can process the file in a browser. Uploading may be unsuitable for large, private, or copyrighted recordings.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Copying an existing H.264 stream does not reduce quality. Re-encoding a non-H.264 source introduces a generation loss, and converting to .264 does not inherently make the video smaller; file size depends mainly on resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and CRF settings.
Use ffprobe to verify that the source actually contains H.264 before using stream copy. If the destination needs audio or synchronized playback, export to MP4 instead:
ffmpeg -i input.ts -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4
Raw H.264 files may lack timing information required by some players, and they cannot reliably represent multiple audio tracks or subtitles.
