MPG files are often rejected by software that expects an H.264 elementary video stream, such as certain broadcast, surveillance, authoring, or embedded-device tools. Converting the MPEG video to .264 can also reduce video size, but the result normally contains video only and has no MP4-style container metadata.

What the MPG format is

.mpg usually identifies an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video file, commonly containing MPEG video with MPEG audio in an MPG container or program stream. DVD-authoring software, older camcorders, television capture hardware, video-editing applications, and MPEG encoders commonly create MPG files. You may also encounter them in archived television recordings, VCD or SVCD material, and older camera exports.

MPG is widely supported, but its older compression standards generally produce larger files than H.264 at comparable visual quality. The file may contain interlaced video, a variable or non-square pixel aspect ratio, and audio that cannot be stored in a raw .264 output.

What the 264 format is

A .264 file normally contains a raw H.264/AVC elementary video stream. H.264 provides substantially better compression than MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, making it suitable for lower-bitrate delivery, hardware decoders, surveillance systems, broadcast workflows, and applications that specifically request an H.264 stream.

Unlike .mp4, .mkv, or .mov, raw 264 has no general-purpose container for audio, subtitles, chapters, thumbnails, or timestamps. Some programs expect Annex B H.264 data with start codes, while others require H.264 inside an MP4 or another container; changing the extension alone does not perform this conversion.

How to actually convert MPG to 264

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop method because it can decode MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 and encode H.264 as a raw elementary stream.

  1. Install FFmpeg and place the source file in an accessible folder.
  2. Open a terminal or Command Prompt in that folder.
  3. Run ffmpeg -i input.mpg -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 23 -an -f h264 output.264.
  4. Test output.264 in the target application or device before deleting the MPG source.

The command copies no audio because raw 264 is a video-only format. Replace input.mpg and output.264 with the actual filenames. Use a smaller CRF value for higher quality and a larger value for a smaller file; CRF 18–23 is a practical range for visually lossless to moderate-quality output. The slow preset can reduce bitrate at similar quality but takes longer than medium.

For a free conversion without installing software, upload the MPG file to 101convert.com, choose the 264 video output when available, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Confirm that the receiving program accepts raw H.264 rather than requiring an MP4 container.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

This is a lossy re-encode: decoding MPG and encoding H.264 cannot restore detail already lost in the source. Avoid unnecessary scaling, and preserve the source frame rate with FFmpeg's default behavior. For interlaced MPG footage, use a deinterlacing filter such as -vf yadif when the destination expects progressive video; otherwise combing artifacts may remain.

Some hardware requires a specific resolution, frame rate, profile, level, or pixel format. For a broadly compatible 8-bit output, add -pix_fmt yuv420p. If the destination requires a particular frame size or rate, specify them explicitly, for example -vf "scale=1280:720,fps=30". Do not use these filters without a requirement if preserving the original geometry and timing matters.

If audio must remain with the video, create a containerized H.264 file instead, such as ffmpeg -i input.mpg -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -b:a 160k output.mp4. That produces H.264 video in MP4, not a raw 264 file, and is usually the more compatible choice for players and editors.
