An editing application, Apple workflow, or playback device may require a QuickTime .mov container instead of an MPEG file. Converting also lets you choose a codec such as H.264 for playback or ProRes for editing, but transcoding cannot restore quality already lost in the source.
What the .mpg format is
.mpg and .mpeg files commonly contain MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video with MPEG audio, usually in an MPEG program stream. MPEG-1 is associated with Video CD and older downloads; MPEG-2 is used by DVDs, digital television recordings, and some older camcorders. Older Windows software, DVD authoring applications, and consumer cameras are common sources.
The extension does not identify one exact codec configuration. Before converting, inspect the file with MediaInfo or FFmpeg if its frame rate, interlacing, aspect ratio, audio channels, or sample rate must be preserved.
What the .mov format is
MOV is a QuickTime multimedia container developed by Apple. It can store video, audio, subtitles, timecode, and metadata, including streams encoded with H.264, HEVC, ProRes, or uncompressed codecs.
H.264 video with AAC audio in MOV is suitable for general playback and produces smaller files than editing codecs. ProRes in MOV is better for supported editing workflows because it is designed as an intermediate codec, but it creates much larger files. Changing the container from MPG to MOV alone does not improve quality or reduce size.

Convert with FFmpeg
FFmpeg provides direct control over the output codec, quality, and audio settings. Run this command in the folder containing the source file:
ffmpeg -i input.mpg -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mov
Replace the filenames with the actual source and destination names. This creates H.264 video and AAC audio in a MOV container. CRF 18 produces a high-quality, relatively large result; values around 20–23 usually reduce size at the cost of more visible compression. The command normally retains the source frame rate and dimensions unless additional filters or options are specified.
For an editing intermediate, use ProRes and uncompressed PCM audio:
ffmpeg -i input.mpg -c:v prores_ks -profile:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.mov
Profile 3 is ProRes 422 HQ; profile 2 is ProRes 422, and profile 1 is ProRes 422 LT. ProRes files are substantially larger than H.264 files and should be used only when the target editing system supports them.
If the destination application accepts the original MPEG codecs inside MOV, try remuxing without re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i input.mpg -c copy output.mov
Remuxing is fast and preserves the original streams exactly, but it may fail or produce a MOV that the target application cannot decode. Use transcoding when the application requires H.264, ProRes, AAC, or another specific codec.
Use desktop video software
In a desktop converter that offers an explicit MOV or QuickTime profile, open the MPG file, select MOV, choose H.264 with AAC for general playback or ProRes with PCM for editing, retain the original frame size and frame rate, set the destination filename, and start the export.
FFmpeg is the more reliable choice when an exact MOV output is required. HandBrake is useful for MPEG transcoding but normally exports MP4 rather than MOV, so it should not be the primary recommendation for a required .mov file. VLC can convert media, but its available MOV profiles and codec controls vary by version and platform.
Quality and compatibility limits
Converting MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 to H.264 or ProRes decodes and re-encodes the video, causing some generation loss. Keep the original MPG as the archive, and do not upscale it unless a delivery specification requires a larger frame size.
MPEG-2 recordings may be interlaced. Combing artifacts can appear when interlaced video is displayed progressively, so deinterlace deliberately when required:
ffmpeg -i input.mpg -vf yadif -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mov
Keep the original interlacing instead when the output is intended for an interlaced broadcast workflow. Test the finished file in the target application: support depends on the codec, audio format, sample rate, frame rate, metadata, and the MOV container itself. H.264 with AAC generally offers broader playback support, while ProRes with PCM is more appropriate for compatible editing systems.
