How to convert mkv to mov file

  • Video

Apple software and devices may reject an MKV file or provide limited track and subtitle support when a project requires a QuickTime container. Converting it to MOV can make the video easier to import into iMovie, Final Cut Pro, or another editor, but the codecs inside the MOV file must also be compatible.

What the MKV format is

MKV, or Matroska Video, is an open multimedia container that can hold video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, menus, attachments, and metadata in one file. It supports many codecs and is common for downloaded video, screen recordings, archival copies, and Blu-ray backups.

MKV is useful when a file needs selectable languages, subtitle tracks, or other structured content. Programs such as MakeMKV, OBS Studio, HandBrake, and FFmpeg can create MKV files. The MKV container does not determine the video quality or codec; it only packages the streams and related data.

What the MOV format is

MOV is the QuickTime container developed by Apple. It is commonly used with macOS editing and playback software, including QuickTime Player, iMovie, and Final Cut Pro, as well as professional post-production applications.

MOV can contain H.264, HEVC, ProRes, AAC, and uncompressed or PCM audio. It is suitable for Apple-oriented editing and production workflows, but the .mov extension does not guarantee compatibility. The receiving application must support the contained video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, color format, and audio layout.

How to convert with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most flexible desktop option when you need to select tracks, preserve compatible streams, control quality, or create an editing master. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the MKV file, and inspect the input if it contains several audio or subtitle tracks:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv

If the video and audio codecs are valid in MOV and accepted by the target application, copy the streams without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy output.mov

-c copy changes the container without changing the encoded media, so it is fast and introduces no generation loss. It fails or produces an unusable file when a selected codec, subtitle format, track arrangement, or other MKV feature is not supported by MOV or the destination software. The command selects the first video and first audio stream; select another language with, for example, -map 0:a:1.

For broader playback compatibility, re-encode to H.264 video and AAC audio:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart output.mov

-crf 18 usually gives high-quality H.264 output; -crf 22 or -crf 23 generally produces a smaller file with more quality loss. Re-encoding takes longer and cannot restore detail already lost in the source.

How to convert for video editing

For repeated editing, generate an intra-frame ProRes file instead of an H.264 delivery file when the application supports ProRes and storage space is available:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v prores_ks -profile:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.mov

ProRes and PCM produce much larger files than H.264 and AAC, but their editing performance is generally better because ProRes is designed for frame-accurate post-production rather than compact distribution.

How to convert without installing software

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the MKV, select MOV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result after processing finishes.

Online conversion requires uploading the source, so do not use it for confidential footage unless the service's handling policy is acceptable. Large files may also be restricted by upload, storage, or processing limits.

Compatibility and quality limits

Changing the container with stream copying preserves the original quality, but it does not make incompatible codecs compatible. Re-encoding can reduce quality and may produce a larger or smaller file depending on the source and settings.

MOV may not preserve every MKV feature. Multiple audio tracks require explicit mapping, subtitle tracks may be discarded or require separate export, and chapters, menus, and attachments may not transfer. Burning subtitles into the video makes them broadly visible but requires re-encoding.

HandBrake can open MKV files, but its standard output choices are MP4 and WebM rather than MOV, so it is not the appropriate tool when a true .mov file is required. After conversion, test the file in the exact editor, player, or device that will use it; MOV compatibility depends on the streams inside the container, not the filename alone.
