Convert EXR to MOV

Video editors and delivery systems may require one MOV file instead of a directory of EXR frames. The conversion also makes a render easier to preview, share, or encode into a smaller distribution format.

What the EXR format is

OpenEXR is a high-dynamic-range raster format developed for visual-effects and computer-graphics production. It stores high-precision RGB or RGBA pixels, commonly as 16-bit half-float or 32-bit float data, and can contain multiple channels, layers, deep data, and metadata.

Renderers and applications such as Blender, Houdini, Maya, 3ds Max, Nuke, After Effects, and DaVinci Resolve commonly create EXR files. Production output is usually a numbered sequence such as shot.1001.exr, shot.1002.exr, and shot.1003.exr. Each EXR is one frame and has no inherent frame rate; a single EXR produces only a one-frame movie unless it is used repeatedly.

What the MOV format is

MOV is the QuickTime container format. It can hold video, audio, timecode, subtitles, and metadata, but the container does not determine image quality or compatibility by itself; the selected video codec does.

MOV is widely supported by Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Avid Media Composer, and After Effects. Apple ProRes is a common choice for editing and finishing: use ProRes 422 HQ for opaque footage and ProRes 4444 when the alpha channel must be retained. Consumer playback may support H.264 or H.265 more readily, but those codecs are lossy and normally discard alpha.

Convert the sequence with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suitable for repeatable batch conversion. Install a current build with OpenEXR decoding enabled, place the frames in one directory, and check that numbering is continuous.

1. Determine the first frame, zero-padding width, and intended frame rate. A sequence beginning at frame 1001 with four-digit padding uses shot.%04d.exr.
2. For opaque footage, encode ProRes 422 HQ:

ffmpeg -framerate 24 -start_number 1001 -i shot.%04d.exr -c:v prores_ks -profile:v 3 -pix_fmt yuv422p10le output.mov

For an RGBA sequence that needs transparency, use ProRes 4444:

ffmpeg -framerate 24 -start_number 1001 -i shot.%04d.exr -c:v prores_ks -profile:v 4 -pix_fmt yuva444p10le output_with_alpha.mov

Replace 24, 1001, and the filename pattern with the actual values. If FFmpeg reports that EXR is unavailable, use a build compiled with the OpenEXR library. Missing frames can interrupt the sequence or create unintended timing, so inspect the numbering before encoding.

Convert and grade in DaVinci Resolve

1. Open the Media page and choose File → Import → Media.
2. Select the numbered EXR files. If Resolve does not identify them as a sequence, enable its image-sequence import option.
3. Set the timeline frame rate before editing or placing the media; changing it later may require a new timeline.
4. On the Deliver page, choose QuickTime as the format and Apple ProRes 422 HQ or Apple ProRes 4444 as the codec.
5. Set the output resolution, frame rate, data levels, and alpha settings, then add and render the job.

Resolve is the better choice when the EXR is scene-linear, uses ACES or another color-management system, contains passes requiring compositing, or needs grading. FFmpeg is more convenient for an unattended command-line transcode.

Use an online converter

Services such as CloudConvert can convert individual EXR files and may support image sequences through an archive or sequence-specific workflow. Check the service's current input, frame-count, size, codec, and alpha limitations before uploading; online tools often cannot preserve multilayer EXR data or provide precise color-management controls. Uploading a ZIP can also be slow for large renders. Do not send confidential production material to a cloud service unless its use complies with the project's security policy.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Color: EXR commonly stores scene-linear values, while video delivery normally expects display-referred SDR or HDR values. Encoding alone does not apply an sRGB, Rec. 709, or HDR transfer. Apply the intended OCIO or ACES view transform in Resolve or another color-managed application before export.
• Data loss: A MOV stores the rendered image, not arbitrary EXR features. Deep pixels, Cryptomatte data, extra channels, multilayer passes, and most EXR metadata are discarded unless exported separately. ProRes also cannot retain the full range and precision of 32-bit-float EXR data.
• Alpha: ProRes 4444 is the usual MOV choice for transparency. Confirm whether the destination expects straight or premultiplied alpha; a mismatch can produce dark or light edge fringes.
• Frame rate: Because EXR frames do not contain a playback rate, choose one explicitly. The wrong rate changes the movie's duration and motion speed without changing its frames.
• Playback: ProRes is widely supported in professional software but creates relatively large files. Create a separate H.264 or H.265 delivery copy when smaller size or consumer-player compatibility matters.
