Free online F4V to MOV converter

Some Apple applications and video editors accept MOV more reliably than legacy F4V files. Converting an archived F4V can make it usable in a current editing workflow, and stream copying can preserve the original quality when the codecs are compatible.

What the F4V format is

F4V is Adobe’s Flash Video container based on the ISO Base Media File Format. It was used for web streaming, downloaded Flash media, and video exported by Adobe Media Encoder or Flash-related publishing tools. Most F4V files contain H.264/AVC video and AAC audio, although the exact streams depend on how the file was created.

F4V is now a legacy format because Adobe ended Flash Player support at the end of 2020. It is mainly found in older websites, archived streaming content, and legacy video-production folders rather than new publishing workflows.

What the MOV format is

MOV is Apple’s QuickTime multimedia container. It is supported by QuickTime-based software, Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and many professional editing systems. MOV can contain H.264, HEVC, ProRes, DNx, AAC, uncompressed audio, timecode, and production metadata.

The .mov extension does not specify the codecs inside the file. A MOV containing H.264 and AAC is convenient for general playback, while ProRes or another intraframe codec may be more suitable for editing. MOV is not automatically more compatible than F4V on every Windows device or application; compatibility depends on both the container and its streams.

Convert with FFmpeg without re-encoding

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop method when the F4V contains MOV-compatible H.264 video and AAC audio. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the source-file folder, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.f4v -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy output.mov

Replace input.f4v and output.mov with the actual filenames. Put quotation marks around filenames containing spaces. The -c copy option remuxes the existing streams into a MOV container instead of encoding them, so it is fast and does not cause generational quality loss.

Stream copying cannot improve resolution, bitrate, frame rate, audio quality, or damaged frames. It can also fail or produce a file that a particular editor rejects when the source contains unsupported codecs, unusual metadata, encryption, or an incomplete stream.

Transcode when remuxing is unsuitable

When stream copying fails, encode broadly supported H.264 video and AAC audio:

ffmpeg -i input.f4v -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart output.mov

CRF 18 produces high-quality H.264 output; higher CRF values normally create smaller files with lower quality. Transcoding takes longer and can introduce quality loss. For an editing master, use an editing codec such as ProRes instead of H.264 when the target application benefits from intraframe media, but expect a much larger file.
