F4V files often come from older Flash-based video systems, while VOB is required for DVD-Video discs and some standalone DVD players. Conversion normally requires transcoding because F4V commonly contains H.264/AAC media and VOB uses DVD-compatible MPEG-2 video with DVD-authoring structure.

What the F4V format is

F4V is an Adobe Flash video container based on the ISO Base Media File Format, similar to MP4. Adobe Flash Media Server, Adobe Media Encoder, older Flash video platforms, and some broadcast or web systems created F4V files. The container commonly holds H.264 video and AAC audio, although its exact codecs depend on the source.

Modern media players can usually open F4V files with FFmpeg-based software such as VLC, MPC-HC, or FFplay. F4V is less suitable for DVD creation because DVD-Video does not accept arbitrary H.264/AAC streams.

What the VOB format is

VOB, or Video Object, is the MPEG program-stream container used inside a DVD-Video disc's VIDEO_TS folder. It can contain MPEG-2 video, MPEG-1 or AC-3 audio, subtitles, navigation packs, and DVD-specific timing information.

VOB is useful when the result must work in a DVD player, DVD drive, DVD-authoring application, or hardware that recognizes DVD-Video files. A standalone VOB file is not necessarily a complete playable DVD: a proper disc also needs IFO navigation files, BUP backups, and an authored title structure.

How to actually convert F4V to VOB

Use an online converter

For a one-off file, you can convert it on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the F4V, select VOB as the output, start the conversion, and download the result. Do not upload copyrighted, confidential, or very large video unless the service's handling and size limits are acceptable.

Convert with FFmpeg and author a DVD

FFmpeg can transcode the F4V into a DVD-compatible MPEG program stream. Choose ntsc-dvd for NTSC projects or pal-dvd for PAL projects:

ffmpeg -i input.f4v -target ntsc-dvd -aspect 16:9 output.mpg

Use -aspect 4:3 for standard 4:3 material. The -target preset selects DVD-compatible MPEG-2 video, audio, frame rate, resolution, and muxing parameters. Change the input and output filenames as needed.

If you specifically need a VOB-like MPEG program stream rather than a complete DVD, you can write the transcoded stream with a VOB extension:

ffmpeg -i input.f4v -target ntsc-dvd output.vob

This may produce a DVD-compatible stream, but it does not create DVD menus, IFO files, BUP files, or a guaranteed playable disc structure. For a real DVD, import output.mpg into DVDStyler, choose the correct PAL or NTSC television standard, add menus if needed, and select File → Burn DVD or the option to create a DVD folder or ISO.

With the command-line authoring tool DVDAuthor, create a DVD folder from the MPEG file:

mkdir -p dvd/VIDEO_TS
dvdauthor -o dvd -t output.mpg
dvdauthor -o dvd -T

The resulting dvd/VIDEO_TS folder contains the authored VOB files and their associated IFO and BUP files. Test the folder in VLC or a DVD player before burning it.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

This conversion is usually lossy because H.264 video must be decoded and encoded as MPEG-2. Avoid multiple conversions, and select the highest practical MPEG-2 bitrate; DVD video is limited to roughly 4.7 GB for a single-layer disc, including menus and other files.

NTSC and PAL are different video standards. NTSC projects generally use 720×480 at approximately 29.97 frames per second, while PAL projects generally use 720×576 at 25 frames per second. Converting between standards can require frame-rate conversion and may introduce repeated or dropped frames.

DVD-Video has a maximum video bitrate and specific audio requirements. A file that merely ends in .vob may fail in a hardware player if it lacks DVD navigation packs or uses unsupported parameters. DRM-protected or damaged F4V files may not convert successfully, and subtitles or multiple audio tracks may require separate DVD-authoring settings.
