Older standalone DVD/VCD players and some legacy CD authoring workflows require a Video CD rather than an F4V file. Converting the video requires MPEG-1 encoding and usually a VCD disc image, not merely renaming the extension.

What the F4V format is

F4V is Adobe’s Flash Video container based on ISO Base Media File Format, similar to MP4. It commonly stores H.264 video with AAC audio and was created by Adobe Media Encoder, Flash Media Server workflows, and older web-video applications. You may encounter it in archived Flash websites, downloaded legacy video, or exports from Adobe tools.

F4V is a container, so its extension does not determine one fixed resolution, bitrate, or codec. A file may contain video settings that are unsuitable for a VCD without resizing and re-encoding.

What the VCD format is

Video CD stores MPEG-1 video and MPEG-1 Layer II audio in a CD-ROM XA structure. A compliant disc normally uses 352×288 pixels at 25 fps for PAL or 352×240 pixels at approximately 29.97 fps for NTSC, with 44.1 kHz audio at 224 kbit/s and video near 1,150 kbit/s.

VCD is useful for compatible older DVD players, dedicated VCD players, and computers with CD-ROM drives. Its main practical advantage is broad legacy-device compatibility; its limitation is much lower quality than modern H.264 or H.265 video. A 74-minute CD holds roughly 74 minutes of VCD video, and an 80-minute CD holds roughly 80 minutes.

How to actually convert F4V to VCD

Use FFmpeg and a VCD authoring tool

  1. Install FFmpeg and vcdimager. Check the source before encoding with ffprobe input.f4v.
  2. Encode a PAL source with FFmpeg’s VCD preset:
    ffmpeg -i input.f4v -target pal-vcd -aspect 4:3 vcd-video.mpg
    For an NTSC disc, use:
    ffmpeg -i input.f4v -target ntsc-vcd -aspect 4:3 vcd-video.mpg
The preset selects MPEG-1 video, VCD-compatible dimensions and frame rate, MP2 audio, 44.1 kHz sampling, and the standard VCD bitrates. Use -aspect 16:9 only when the intended player and display support widescreen VCD signaling; many older devices expect 4:3.
  3. Author the encoded stream as a VCD image:
    vcdimager -t vcd2 -c videocd.cue -b videocd.bin vcd-video.mpg
This creates a cue sheet and binary disc image. A VCD is not made by copying vcd-video.mpg to a data CD.
  4. Burn videocd.cue with a cue/bin-capable disc-burning program, or use the command-line burner cdrdao:
    cdrdao write --device /dev/sr0 videocd.cue
Replace /dev/sr0 with the optical drive identifier on the system. Select a low or moderate burn speed if the target player has difficulty reading recordable discs.

Use the online converter

You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the F4V file, select VCD as the output, download the result, and verify whether the service provides a playable VCD image or only an MPEG file; an MPEG file still requires VCD authoring before disc burning.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion to VCD is necessarily lossy: high-definition F4V material is reduced to 352-pixel-wide MPEG-1 video, so fine text, fast motion, and dark scenes may show blur or block artifacts. Re-encoding cannot restore detail already absent from the source.

Choose PAL or NTSC to match the target player and television standard. Preserve the source’s aspect ratio with padding rather than stretching when it does not match 4:3; otherwise faces and objects may appear distorted. Test the resulting disc on the actual player because some devices accept only certain CD-R media, reject CD-RW, or do not support VCD at all.
