What the MK3D format is
MK3D is a filename extension for a Matroska container holding stereoscopic video. The container can include video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and Matroska stereo-mode metadata such as side-by-side or top-and-bottom presentation.
MK3D files commonly come from 3D Blu-ray or other 3D video workflows using MakeMKV, MKVToolNix, or similar remuxing tools. They are played by applications and hardware that understand Matroska and the encoded 3D layout, including compatible versions of VLC, mpv, Kodi, and 3D-capable media players. The extension does not identify one specific video codec; the file may contain H.264, H.265, or another codec supported by the container.
What the VCD format is
Video CD is an optical-disc format based on MPEG-1 video and MPEG-1 Layer II audio. A standard VCD uses 352×240 pixels at 29.97 fps for NTSC or 352×288 pixels at 25 fps for PAL, with approximately 1,150 kbit/s video and 224 kbit/s audio. Audio is normally 44.1 kHz stereo.
VCD is useful when the target is an older DVD/VCD player, a disc-authoring workflow, or a legacy archive that specifically requires MPEG-1 VCD material. Its low resolution and low bitrate make files broadly compatible, but quality is substantially below modern HD and 3D formats.
How to actually convert MK3D to VCD
For a standalone video file, FFmpeg is the most direct desktop tool. First check the source streams:
ffprobe input.mk3d
Choose the television standard required by the destination player. For NTSC output, transcode with FFmpeg's VCD preset:
ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -target ntsc-vcd -vf "format=yuv420p" output.mpg
For PAL output, use:
ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -target pal-vcd -vf "format=yuv420p" output.mpg
-map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream and -map 0:a:0? selects the first audio stream if one exists. Replace the audio stream selection when the file contains commentary or another preferred track. If the source has variable frame rate, the VCD preset's conversion to the selected PAL or NTSC frame rate may duplicate or drop frames.
To create a disc image rather than only an MPEG file, install vcdimager and author the converted file:
vcdimager -t vcd2 -c videocd.cue -b videocd.bin output.mpg
The resulting videocd.cue and videocd.bin files form the VCD image. Burn the CUE file with disc-burning software that supports BIN/CUE images; do not burn the MPEG file as an ordinary data disc if the player expects a Video CD.
For a browser-based conversion, upload the MK3D file to 101convert.com, select VCD as the output format if offered, start the conversion, and download the result. An online converter may produce a playable MPEG file without creating a burnable BIN/CUE image, so author the disc separately when necessary.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
VCD has no standard mechanism for carrying Matroska stereo metadata or switching between left and right eye views. A side-by-side or top-and-bottom MK3D source will normally be transcoded as an ordinary 2D frame containing both views, reducing the effective resolution of each eye. A converter that extracts only one eye produces 2D output, not a 3D VCD.
Use PAL when the intended player or television system requires 25 fps and NTSC when it requires 29.97 fps; mismatching the standard can cause playback failure or incorrect motion. Long MK3D sources may exceed the capacity of a single 74-minute VCD, so split the MPEG into disc-length segments before authoring. Check the output with a software player and, when possible, the actual target hardware because some newer players accept MPEG files but do not implement the complete VCD disc structure.
