A VCD player or older MPEG-1 video device may require a .dat file instead of a Matroska video. Converting an MK3D file usually requires re-encoding it to VCD-compatible MPEG-1 because the two formats use different containers and video specifications.

What the MK3D format is

MK3D is the stereoscopic-video variant of the Matroska container, usually identified by the .mk3d extension. It can contain video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and stereoscopic layout metadata such as side-by-side or top-and-bottom presentation. Files are commonly created with Matroska-capable authoring or encoding tools and may also be produced by 3D video workflows, although many applications save the same content with the more common .mkv extension.

MK3D is encountered in archived 3D movies, downloaded stereoscopic video, and files prepared for media players that support Matroska and 3D metadata.

What the DAT format is

In the Video category, .dat usually means the MPEG program-stream file used by Video CD (VCD) discs, commonly stored as MPEGAV/AVSEQ01.DAT. It contains MPEG-1 video and MPEG-1 Layer II audio rather than a general-purpose data format.

VCD DAT files are useful for older standalone VCD players and devices that accept the VCD specification. They have broad compatibility with legacy hardware but much lower quality and less flexibility than MK3D: PAL video is normally 352×288 at 25 fps, NTSC video is 352×240 at approximately 29.97 fps, video bitrate is about 1,150 kbit/s, and audio is normally 44.1 kHz MPEG audio at 224 kbit/s.

How to convert MK3D to DAT

FFmpeg is the most practical desktop tool because it can read Matroska containers and create VCD-compatible MPEG-1 output. Install FFmpeg, then inspect the source streams:

ffprobe input.mk3d

For a PAL target, encode the first video and audio streams with the VCD preset:

ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -target pal-vcd -f mpeg output.dat

For an NTSC target, use:

ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -target ntsc-vcd -f mpeg output.dat

The -map options select the first video and audio streams; change them if the file contains multiple language tracks or video streams. The VCD target converts the video to MPEG-1, applies the required frame rate and dimensions, and encodes compatible MPEG audio. If the source has no audio, omit -map 0:a:0 and use an audio-free workflow only if the target player supports it.

Some applications accept the resulting MPEG program stream only after it has been named with a .dat extension. A physical VCD requires additional disc authoring: place the stream in the VCD structure as MPEGAV/AVSEQ01.DAT and write the disc using VCD authoring software rather than copying the file as ordinary data.

For a no-installation conversion, the 101convert.com website can convert the file for free. Uploading may be unsuitable for large or private videos, and an online converter may not expose stream-selection, VCD-standard, or stereoscopic settings.

Quality and compatibility limitations

This is a lossy downconversion: high-resolution MK3D video becomes low-resolution MPEG-1, and modern codecs, subtitles, chapters, extra audio tracks, and most Matroska metadata are not retained in the VCD DAT stream.

MK3D stereoscopic metadata is also not generally preserved. If the source stores 3D as side-by-side or top-and-bottom imagery, the encoded DAT may retain that layout as ordinary 2D pixels, requiring the playback device or viewer to interpret it manually. MVC-style 3D video may be reduced to one compatible view or fail to decode, depending on FFmpeg support and the source structure.

Choose PAL or NTSC according to the playback device and source region; an incorrect standard can cause rejected discs, incorrect frame rates, or unstable playback. Test output.dat in VLC or the intended hardware before authoring a disc.
