Convert MP4 to DAT
Convert MP4 to DAT with the right codec, resolution, and device-specific settings.
Convert MP4 files online
We don’t have a dedicated online converter for MP4 to DAT yet, but you can convert MP4 files online to these and more formats:
How to convert mp4 to dat file
- Video
- Rating: 2.0/5
Source format: MP4
MP4 is a widely used multimedia container format that can hold video, audio, subtitles, and metadata. It is common for streaming downloads, mobile playback, screen recordings, and general media sharing because it offers good compression and broad compatibility.
In most cases, MP4 is easy to play, edit, and distribute on modern devices.
Target format: DAT
DAT is a generic file extension, not a single universal video standard. In video workflows, it most often refers to VCD-style MPEG-1 video files, but it can also be used by proprietary applications or devices for unrelated data.
Important: a file ending in .dat is not automatically a video file. The exact structure depends on the software or hardware that expects it.
Before you convert
First confirm which DAT format you need. If you are working with an older player, disc image, or legacy device, it may require a specific MPEG-1-based DAT file with strict resolution and audio settings. If the DAT file is for a proprietary program, simple video conversion may not be enough.
If possible, check the device or software documentation for the required codec, frame size, frame rate, and audio format.
Best desktop options
FFmpeg is the most reliable choice for precise control. VLC media player can also convert some files through its built-in conversion feature, though it offers less control than FFmpeg.
Other desktop converters such as Any Video Converter can work for basic re-encoding, but they may not provide the exact legacy settings needed for a true VCD-style DAT file.
Convert MP4 to a video DAT file with FFmpeg
- Install FFmpeg from the official project site.
- Open a terminal or command prompt in the folder containing your MP4 file.
- Run a conversion command such as:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v mpeg1video -c:a mp2 -f mpeg output.dat - If your target device requires a specific resolution, add scaling options such as
-vf scale=352:240for NTSC-style VCD or-vf scale=352:288for PAL-style VCD. - Test the resulting file in the intended player or device.
Note: simply renaming an MP4 file to .dat does not convert it. The file must be re-encoded if the target expects MPEG-1 video.
Convert with VLC
- Open VLC and go to Media → Convert / Save.
- Add the MP4 file and click Convert / Save.
- Choose a profile that uses MPEG video if available, or create a custom profile.
- Set the destination filename to end in
.dat. - Start the conversion and verify playback on the target device.
VLC is convenient, but it may not expose all the codec and resolution settings needed for older DAT-compatible devices.
Online converters
Online converters such as CloudConvert or Convertio may work if you only need a generic re-encoded video file and the destination device accepts a simple MPEG-1-style output. However, online tools are less suitable for legacy DAT requirements because they may not let you control the exact codec, frame size, or audio settings.
Use online conversion only if the DAT file is not tied to a specific device or proprietary format.
Quality and compatibility limits
Converting MP4 to DAT usually means re-encoding, which can reduce quality compared with the original MP4. This is especially true if you must downscale to VCD-era resolutions or use older codecs like MPEG-1.
Because DAT is ambiguous, a successful conversion depends on the destination. If the target application expects a proprietary DAT structure, you may need that program’s own export function rather than a standard video converter.
If the device supports a more common format such as MP4, MPEG-1, or AVI, using that format is usually more reliable than DAT.
