Convert MP4 to AEP

An MP4 must be brought into Adobe After Effects when it needs compositing, motion graphics, tracking, effects, or titles. The result is an .aep project that references the video; it is not a converted, playable video file.

Creating an AEP also lets a team retain compositions, layers, keyframes, effects, masks, and render settings for later editing.

MP4 and AEP file types

.mp4 is a multimedia container used by phones, cameras, screen recorders, web services, browsers, and video editors. It commonly contains H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, AV1, or MPEG-4 video with AAC audio. MP4 is designed for encoded delivery and playback, not for storing editable After Effects layers, compositions, or animation data.

.aep is Adobe After Effects' native project format. It stores project structure: compositions, layer timing, effects, keyframes, expressions, masks, render settings, and links to imported footage. An AEP normally does not embed the MP4 source file. Moving, renaming, or deleting the source can cause missing-footage errors.

Creating an AEP project from MP4 footage

Adobe After Effects is required to create a usable AEP project. Video converters, Adobe Media Encoder, HandBrake, FFmpeg, and online conversion sites can transcode video, but they cannot infer or create an editable After Effects project structure from an MP4.

1. Open After Effects and choose File → New → New Project.
2. Choose File → Import → File, select the MP4, and confirm that it appears in the Project panel. Dragging the file into that panel has the same result.
3. Drag the imported footage onto the New Composition button in the Project panel. After Effects creates a composition based on the footage dimensions, frame rate, pixel aspect ratio, and duration.
4. Add text, effects, masks, tracking, audio, or other layers as required. These edits are stored in the project and do not alter the original MP4.
5. Choose File → Save As → Save As and save a file such as video_project.aep.
6. For delivery to another computer or for archiving, choose File → Dependencies → Collect Files. Select the required compositions and collect the project into a new folder containing the AEP and copied source footage.

Premiere Pro can create an After Effects composition from selected clips through File → Adobe Dynamic Link → Replace With After Effects Composition. After Effects still creates and saves the AEP project; Dynamic Link does not convert an MP4 directly into project data.

Quality and compatibility limits

Importing an MP4 into After Effects does not re-encode it or reduce its quality. Quality changes only if you render a new video from the composition.

H.264 and H.265 MP4 files are long-GOP delivery formats and can perform poorly in effects-heavy work. Phone and screen-recording footage may also use variable frame rate, which can cause timing, audio-sync, or frame-interpretation problems. Transcode demanding or variable-frame-rate footage to a constant-frame-rate editing codec such as Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR before importing; Adobe Media Encoder, Adobe Premiere Pro, HandBrake, and FFmpeg can perform this transcode, but none creates the AEP.

Projects saved by newer After Effects releases may not open in older releases. When the required option is available, use File → Save As → Save a Copy As and select the collaborator's supported version.

An AEP cannot play in media players, upload services, or consumer devices. To create a delivery video, select the composition and use Composition → Add to Adobe Media Encoder Queue, then choose an H.264 preset to export a new MP4.

Do not use an online “MP4 to AEP converter.” A service cannot reconstruct editable layers or effects from a flattened video, and uploading source footage may create privacy or rights risks. Use After Effects locally, then use Collect Files when the project and its linked media must be transferred together.
