Convert MP4 to VLC

A video does not need conversion to play in VLC Media Player because VLC opens standard MP4 files directly. Conversion is needed only when another device or application requires a different container, codec combination, or playlist file.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container defined by the MPEG-4 family of standards. It commonly contains H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio, but the .mp4 extension does not specify the codecs inside the file.

Phones, cameras, screen recorders, browsers, streaming tools, and video editors such as Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve commonly create MP4 files. MP4 is widely supported by televisions, mobile devices, web browsers, editing software, and VLC, although unusual codecs, profiles, resolutions, or audio formats can still cause compatibility problems.

What the VLC format is

VLC is a media player, not a video file format. There is no standard “VLC video” format and no meaningful MP4-to-VLC video conversion. Renaming video.mp4 to video.vlc does not convert the file and normally makes it harder for applications to identify.

VLC can open MP4 and many other containers, including MKV, WebM, AVI, and MOV. It can also save playlists, usually as .xspf, .m3u, or .pls. A playlist contains references to media files; it does not contain a converted copy of the video.

How to open MP4 in VLC

1. Start VLC and select Media → Open File.
2. Choose the .mp4 file and select Open. Dragging the file into the VLC window also works.

If a playlist is what another application needs, add the MP4 to VLC's playlist, then use Media → Save Playlist to File and select .xspf, .m3u, or another format supported by the destination application. Keep the referenced MP4 in its expected location; moving or renaming it can break the playlist path.

How to convert MP4 with VLC

Use VLC's transcoder only when the destination requires different codecs or a different container:

1. Open Media → Convert / Save.
2. Select Add, choose the MP4 file, and select Convert / Save.
3. Choose a profile compatible with the destination, such as an H.264/AAC MP4 profile.
4. Set the destination filename with the correct extension, such as converted.mp4, converted.mkv, or converted.webm.
5. Select Start and wait for VLC to decode and encode the file.

VLC's available profiles and menu labels vary by version. The output extension alone does not determine the encoding; verify the selected video and audio codecs when the receiving device has strict requirements.

Using FFmpeg or an online converter

FFmpeg is more suitable for batch jobs and exact codec settings. This command creates an H.264/AAC MP4 with broadly compatible settings:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -crf 23 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.mp4

For WebM output, use codecs supported by the WebM container:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libvpx-vp9 -c:a libopus output.webm

CloudConvert and Zamzar can convert MP4 to a specified format through a browser. They cannot create a standard “VLC video” file. Uploading may be unsuitable for confidential, very large, or high-resolution videos because of transfer limits, processing time, and privacy requirements; VLC and FFmpeg keep the source on the local computer.

Quality and compatibility limits

Transcoding decodes and re-encodes the streams, so lossy output can reduce detail and introduce additional compression artifacts. Choose a sufficiently high quality setting and avoid repeated conversions.

If the destination container supports the original codecs, FFmpeg can remux the file without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0 -c copy output.mkv

Remuxing is fast and lossless, but it cannot repair a damaged file or make unsupported codecs compatible. If software asks for a “VLC file,” confirm whether it actually requires an MP4, another video container, or a playlist such as .xspf or .m3u.
