How to convert mp4 to midi file

Source format: mp4

MP4 is a widely used video container format that can store video, audio, subtitles, and metadata in one file. It is commonly used for online video, recordings, and shared media. For this task, the important point is that MP4 usually contains audio, but it does not contain musical note data that can be directly saved as MIDI.

Target format: midi

MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is not an audio format. It stores performance instructions such as notes, timing, velocity, pitch bends, and instrument events. MIDI files are useful for editing, arranging, playback, and notation. They are small and flexible, but they only represent musical events, not the original sound.

How mp4 to midi conversion works

There is no true one-click conversion from MP4 to MIDI. The process depends on the audio inside the video. In practice, you must first extract the audio, then use audio-to-MIDI transcription software to detect notes and rhythms.

Best desktop workflow:

  1. Extract the audio from the MP4 file with FFmpeg or another audio tool.
  2. Open the extracted audio in a transcription program such as Melodyne, Ableton Live, or AnthemScore.
  3. Review the detected notes, correct mistakes, and export as .mid.

Step 1: extract audio from the MP4

Using FFmpeg, you can create a WAV file that is easier for transcription tools to analyze:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vn -acodec pcm_s16le output.wav

This removes the video stream and saves the audio as uncompressed WAV.

Step 2: convert audio to MIDI

Open output.wav in a transcription program:

  • Melodyne: excellent for monophonic vocals, bass, and solo instruments; after analysis, use File → Export → MIDI if your version supports MIDI export.
  • Ableton Live: useful for melodic, harmonic, or drum material; right-click an audio clip and choose Convert Melody to New MIDI Track, Convert Harmony to New MIDI Track, or Convert Drums to New MIDI Track.
  • AnthemScore: designed specifically for automatic music transcription; import the audio, clean up the notes, then export MIDI.

Step 3: verify and edit the MIDI

Open the exported MIDI in a DAW or notation program such as FL Studio, Cubase, Logic Pro, Reaper, or MuseScore. Correct timing, note lengths, and wrong detections before using the file in production.

Recommended software and online options

Desktop software is usually the best choice because audio-to-MIDI conversion needs analysis and manual cleanup.

  • FFmpeg: free, reliable command-line tool for extracting audio from MP4 files.
  • Audacity: free, open-source editor that can extract or convert audio, but it does not convert audio to MIDI directly.
  • Melodyne: strong pitch detection and MIDI export for clean melodic material.
  • Ableton Live: built-in audio-to-MIDI tools for melody, harmony, and drums.
  • AnthemScore: focused on automatic transcription and MIDI export.
  • Logic Pro: includes useful audio-to-MIDI features on macOS.

Online converters are limited for this task. Many web tools can extract audio from MP4, but fewer can reliably transcribe audio to MIDI. If you use a browser-based service, choose one that explicitly supports audio-to-MIDI transcription and review its privacy policy before uploading files. For better accuracy and privacy, desktop software is strongly recommended.

Quality and limitations

MP4 to MIDI is not a direct format conversion; it is an audio transcription problem. Results depend heavily on the source audio:

  • Best results: solo melody, single instrument, clean recording, little reverb or background noise.
  • Poor results: full songs, mixed vocals and instruments, heavy effects, drums with complex patterns, or noisy speech.
  • Speech cannot usually be converted meaningfully to MIDI, because MIDI represents musical notes rather than spoken language.
  • Polyphonic music is harder to transcribe accurately than monophonic material.
  • MIDI does not preserve original sound; it only captures note events, so the exported file will need instruments or sounds assigned in a DAW.

If your MP4 contains a simple melody or isolated instrument, the conversion can be useful. If it contains a full mixed song, expect to spend time editing the MIDI manually after transcription.
