Convert MP4 to TREC

Camtasia workflows sometimes require a native .trec recording for continued editing or access to capture-specific data. An existing MP4 cannot normally be converted into that recording type, so the practical choice is to import the MP4 or capture the source again with Camtasia Recorder.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is an ISO Base Media File Format container commonly carrying H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio. Phones, cameras, browsers, screen recorders such as OBS Studio, and editors such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Camtasia create or export MP4 files. Its broad playback support makes it suitable for distribution and ordinary video editing, but an MP4 usually contains only rendered audio and video rather than the original screen-capture data.

What the TREC format is

TREC is TechSmith’s proprietary recording container used by Camtasia Recorder and supported by compatible Camtasia versions. Depending on the recording and software version, it can retain capture information such as cursor data, webcam video, microphone audio, system audio, recording dimensions, and metadata used during editing. Those elements are different from the rendered frames and mixed audio in a normal MP4.

TREC is intended for Camtasia editing, not general playback or distribution. Support and recording behavior vary between Camtasia releases. Renaming video.mp4 to video.trec changes only the filename extension and does not create a valid TREC file.

How to handle an MP4 when TREC is required

There is no dependable desktop or online converter that can reconstruct a native TREC file from an ordinary MP4. The appropriate method depends on the required result:

1. Edit the MP4 in Camtasia: open Camtasia and choose File → Import → Media or the equivalent import command for the installed version. Select the MP4, add it to the timeline, and edit it as a standard media clip. The source remains an MP4 inside the project; importing it does not turn it into TREC.
2. Create a new TREC capture: open Camtasia Recorder, select the display or application window, camera, microphone, and system-audio sources, then start a new recording. If the installed version uses TREC for Recorder output, it creates a genuine .trec file. This produces a new capture rather than converting the existing MP4 and may not reproduce the original cursor movement, timing, resolution, or audio sources.
3. Export a finished video: use Export → Local File or the equivalent production command and select MP4. This is the correct output for sharing and playback, but it is not a TREC recording.

Camtasia is the relevant desktop application for creating and opening compatible TREC files. Online services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar can convert MP4 to supported delivery formats, but they generally do not create native TREC files; uploading confidential recordings also exposes them to a third-party service. HandBrake or FFmpeg can re-encode an MP4 when Camtasia has trouble decoding the original, but neither tool writes TREC.

Quality and compatibility limits

Import the original MP4 first to avoid an unnecessary generation of compression. If compatibility requires a new file, FFmpeg can create a broadly supported H.264/AAC MP4:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k compatible.mp4

The command transcodes the video and may reduce quality; a lower CRF generally retains more quality at the cost of a larger file. It creates another MP4, not TREC. Neither transcoding nor importing can restore cursor paths, separate microphone and system-audio streams, webcam layers, original capture metadata, or other information absent from the source. Keep the original MP4 and the Camtasia project, because exporting to a standard video file is generally irreversible with respect to those recording features.
