A recipient may require .fbr because a BB FlashBack workflow accepts its native recording format for playback or editing. An MP4 usually cannot be converted into a fully editable FlashBack recording, so importing it when supported or recording its playback are the practical alternatives.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container commonly holding H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio. Phones, cameras, OBS Studio, screen recorders, video editors, streaming services, and web browsers frequently create MP4 files. Its broad compatibility suits playback, editing, distribution, and archiving.

What the FBR format is

FBR is BB FlashBack's proprietary screen-recording format for Windows. A native recording can preserve screen frames, audio, cursor data, and FlashBack-specific editing information that a rendered MP4 does not contain. FBR is not a general-purpose video container and is not normally produced by FFmpeg, VLC, HandBrake, or online conversion sites.

An MP4 contains rendered video; it does not contain the original cursor events, recording objects, or other source data required to recreate a native FBR project. Changing the filename extension cannot perform this conversion.

How to create an FBR from an MP4

Try importing the MP4

  1. Install a current Windows edition of BB FlashBack Pro and check its documentation for video-import support. Import features and supported codecs vary by release; FlashBack Express and older versions may not provide the same functions.
  2. Open FlashBack and use its media or video import command, then select the MP4. If the program only opens existing FBR files, it cannot perform this method.
  3. If FlashBack places the imported video in a recording that can be saved as an FBR file, use File → Save As and select .fbr, if that option is offered.
  4. Reopen the resulting file in FlashBack Player or FlashBack Pro and check the picture, audio, duration, and synchronization.

Importing an MP4, when available, does not restore the MP4's original cursor events or make its rendered frames natively editable. Do not assume that an imported clip can be saved as FBR; the exact behavior depends on the installed FlashBack version.

Record MP4 playback as a new FBR

  1. Open the MP4 in a player such as VLC. Set the intended playback resolution, scaling, and audio output before recording.
  2. Start the BB FlashBack screen recorder, select the player window or the full display, enable system or speaker audio, and use FlashBack's native recording format. The recorder normally creates an FBR recording; it may not show a separate format selector.
  3. Start playback from the beginning and stop the FlashBack recording when the video ends.
  4. Save the recording, then open the resulting .fbr file in FlashBack to verify it.

Keep the player stationary and at a fixed size during capture. Disable notifications and other overlays, and prevent sleep or screen locking. If system-audio capture is unavailable, route audio through a supported loopback or recording device; otherwise the FBR may contain video without sound.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Screen recording re-encodes or resamples the displayed image and can reduce sharpness, change the frame rate, add timing drift, or capture player controls and desktop elements. It does not preserve MP4 subtitles, chapters, alternate audio tracks, container metadata, or the source file's original quality. It also cannot recreate the original FlashBack cursor events or editable objects.

There is no generally available, reputable online converter that creates genuine FBR files from MP4. Online services that advertise this output should be treated cautiously, especially for confidential recordings. FFmpeg, VLC, HandBrake, and ordinary web converters can create or transcode MP4 and other standard video formats, but they do not generate native FBR recordings.

Retain the original MP4 because FBR compatibility depends on BB FlashBack software and version support. If the recipient only needs a playable video, provide the MP4 or export a standard format instead of creating an FBR.

Frequently asked questions

Is MP4 to FBR a direct video conversion?

No, it normally creates a new FBR screen recording while the MP4 plays. The result captures the playback output rather than preserving the original MP4 video stream and metadata.

Will MP4 to FBR reduce video quality?

It can, because quality depends on the playback resolution, capture resolution, frame rate, and compression settings. Fine detail may be lost if the recording resolution is lower than the source or the playback is scaled.

Will the FBR file keep the original MP4 audio and video separately?

No, the FBR recording contains newly captured video and any audio that the recording setup successfully records. The original MP4 tracks, subtitles, metadata, and other stream details are not automatically retained.

Why does my FBR recording show a black video area from the MP4?

Black frames can occur when the player uses protected content or a hardware-accelerated overlay that the recorder cannot capture. Changing the playback or capture method may be necessary, where permitted.
