Convert FBR to MP4

What the FBR format is

FBR is the native recording format used by BB FlashBack, a Windows screen-recording application from Blueberry Software. An FBR file can contain screen video, microphone or system audio, cursor data, annotations, zoom effects, and BB FlashBack editing information.

BB FlashBack Player or the BB FlashBack edition that created the file is normally required to open it. VLC, Windows Media Player, QuickTime, FFmpeg, and most web-based converters generally cannot interpret FBR directly.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a widely supported multimedia container. For broad compatibility, exports usually use H.264 video with AAC audio, although MP4 can contain other codecs.

MP4 files can be played by browsers, phones, televisions, media players, video editors, and most cloud-storage services. They are usually smaller than uncompressed or lightly compressed intermediate video, but the final size depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.

Convert FBR with BB FlashBack

1. Install BB FlashBack Player or the BB FlashBack edition used to create the recording, then open the .fbr file.
2. Open the export command, commonly File → Export or File → Export Movie. Menu names vary by version.
3. Select MP4, choose a destination whose filename ends in .mp4, and start the export. Some editions or older versions offer MP4 only with particular licenses; others may provide AVI or WMV instead.
4. Keep the original resolution and source frame rate unless a smaller file is required. Play the finished MP4 from beginning to end and check the video, audio, cursor, and annotation layers.

If BB FlashBack Player does not provide MP4 export, use its available movie export, such as AVI or WMV, as an intermediate file. The exact export choices depend on the installed edition and version.

Convert the intermediate file with FFmpeg

Install FFmpeg from ffmpeg.org or through a trusted package manager. For an AVI or WMV export, encode an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio:

ffmpeg -i input.avi -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart output.mp4

Replace input.avi with the actual AVI or WMV filename. A CRF value of about 18 to 23 is typical for screen recordings; lower values preserve more detail and produce larger files. If the source has no audio, omit -c:a aac -b:a 128k.

Stream copying avoids video re-encoding only when the source video codec is compatible with MP4:

ffmpeg -i input.avi -c:v copy -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4

If the copied video will not play, or FFmpeg reports an incompatible codec, use the H.264 command instead. Re-encoding can reduce quality, so retain the FBR file and the first-generation AVI or WMV export.

Online conversion options

CloudConvert and Convertio are reputable options for converting the exported AVI or WMV file to MP4, but they do not replace BB FlashBack for reading proprietary FBR data. Upload the intermediate file, select MP4, choose H.264/AAC when the service exposes codec settings, start the conversion, and download and test the result.

Do not assume that a service accepts FBR merely because it accepts video files. If a converter explicitly lists FBR support, test it with a short copy first. Uploading a screen recording may disclose passwords, documents, customer data, or other confidential content; local BB FlashBack and FFmpeg conversion is safer for sensitive recordings.

Quality and compatibility limits

Exporting through BB FlashBack is preferable to recording the playback window because it preserves the source frames and audio without display scaling, dropped frames, or playback artifacts.

Editable annotations, cursor emphasis, zoom effects, and other BB FlashBack-specific elements are normally rendered into the MP4 as pixels. They cannot usually be moved or edited as separate objects after export.

Damaged or version-specific FBR files may open only in the BB FlashBack release that created them. If an export fails, try that release, update or reinstall BB FlashBack, and preserve the original file before attempting repairs.
