Most music players and audio editors cannot open a .fbr screen recording, so extracting its narration or system audio requires a standard media export first. Converting the exported video to .mp3 produces a smaller, widely compatible audio file for playback, editing, or archiving.
What the FBR format is
.fbr is the proprietary recording format used by Blueberry Software’s BB FlashBack screen-recording software, including FlashBack Pro and older FlashBack releases. An FBR file can contain screen video, narration, system audio, cursor activity, and FlashBack editing information. It is commonly created for software demonstrations, training, technical support, and desktop capture archives.
FBR is not a normal audio or video container. Open it with FlashBack Player or FlashBack Pro; renaming .fbr to another extension does not convert it. The free Player may be able to play a recording but may not provide every export function, so use a FlashBack edition that supports movie export when necessary.
What the MP3 format is
.mp3 stores audio only. The conversion removes the screen image, cursor movements, and FlashBack-specific data, while retaining any audible narration or system sound included in the recording. MP3 is supported by phones, computers, web services, portable players, and most audio editors, and its lossy compression normally produces a much smaller file than a video export.
MP3 cannot restore missing audio, remove serious background noise, or improve a low-quality source. It also cannot preserve separate audio tracks if the export has already mixed them together.
Desktop conversion with FlashBack and FFmpeg
- Install FlashBack Player or FlashBack Pro from Blueberry Software, using the same release or a newer compatible release than the one that created the recording. Open the
.fbrfile and confirm that the required audio is audible. - Use the available export command, such as File → Export or File → Export Movie. Menu names and output choices vary by FlashBack version.
- Export to a standard container such as MP4, AVI, or WMV. Select the highest available audio quality; choose uncompressed or PCM audio when the exporter offers it to avoid an unnecessary lossy intermediate. If the program provides a direct audio or WAV export, that is preferable to exporting video.
- Play the exported file in VLC or another standard player. Confirm that it contains the expected narration or system audio before encoding.
- Install FFmpeg from ffmpeg.org or your operating system’s package manager. Run this command in the folder containing the export:
ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -vn -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 recording.mp3
Replace the input filename as needed; the same command works with an AVI, WMV, or WAV input. -vn discards video, and -q:a 2 selects high-quality variable-bitrate MP3 encoding. Use -q:a 4 for a smaller file, or use -b:a 192k for a fixed 192-kbps bitrate.
VLC provides a graphical alternative: open Media → Convert/Save, add the exported video, choose an Audio-MP3 profile, select a destination filename, and start the conversion. FFmpeg generally exposes more reliable codec and quality controls.
Using an online converter after export
There is no consistently reliable direct FBR-to-MP3 web converter because FBR support depends on proprietary FlashBack versions. After FlashBack has produced MP4, AVI, WMV, or WAV, services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar can convert that standard file to MP3; select the input and output formats on the service because supported codecs and limits can change.
Do not upload confidential demonstrations, customer sessions, passwords, private conversations, or support recordings unless the service’s retention and deletion terms are acceptable. Desktop FFmpeg, VLC, or Audacity avoids that upload.
Quality and compatibility limits
Exporting a compressed FlashBack video and then encoding MP3 can apply two lossy stages. Use the highest-quality FlashBack export, or an audio-only PCM/WAV export, and encode MP3 only once. Keep the original FBR and intermediate file if future editing or re-exporting may be required.
If FFmpeg reports that the input has no audio stream, the FBR may contain no recorded audio, or FlashBack may have exported video without its audio track. Reopen the FBR, check its audio settings, and repeat the export. If FlashBack cannot open the recording, try the original or a newer compatible release; an unrelated release may not support an older FBR variant.

Frequently asked questions
Does converting FBR to MP3 keep the video?
No, the conversion extracts audio only, so the screen recording, cursor movement, and visual timing are discarded. The result is an MP3 audio file rather than an editable FBR recording.
Will FBR to MP3 reduce the audio quality?
Usually, yes, because MP3 encoding is lossy and may discard some audio detail. The result depends on the source recording and the selected MP3 bitrate and encoding settings.
Can I extract both narration and system audio from an FBR file?
You can extract the audio tracks that are present in the FBR recording, but the result depends on how the recording stored narration and system sounds. If only one source was recorded, the MP3 cannot restore the missing audio.
Why is my converted MP3 silent or missing audio?
The FBR recording may not contain an audio track, or its audio may not be supported correctly by the conversion software. A recording with muted or disabled narration and system audio will produce no usable sound in the MP3.
