A Windows application, presentation system, or archive may require a playable .wmv file instead of BB FlashBack’s proprietary recording. The dependable method is to render the FBR recording from BB FlashBack, then verify the resulting file in the target Windows software.

What the FBR format is

FBR is the proprietary recording format created by Blueberry Software’s BB FlashBack screen recorder. Depending on the recording settings, it can contain screen activity, microphone or system audio, webcam video, cursor movement, annotations, and recording metadata.

FBR is intended to be opened by BB FlashBack rather than by general-purpose media players. Renaming meeting.fbr to meeting.wmv does not convert it, and most standard converters cannot decode the source directly.

What the WMV format is

WMV is a Microsoft video format normally stored with the .wmv extension. It remains useful for Windows Media Player, older Windows applications, legacy presentation systems, and software that specifically requests Windows Media.

WMV can produce a relatively small compressed file, but the result depends on the selected codec, frame rate, frame size, and bit rate. WMV support is less consistent on macOS, mobile devices, modern browsers, and non-Windows players than MP4 with H.264 video.

Convert FBR with BB FlashBack

  1. Install a BB FlashBack edition that includes movie export, normally BB FlashBack Pro or a compatible version supplied by Blueberry Software. Export options vary between versions and editions; a playback-only installation may not provide WMV export.
  2. Open the recording with File → Open, or open meeting.fbr through its file association.
  3. Preview the recording and check that the required screen content, cursor effects, annotations, webcam footage, and audio are present. The FBR remains the editable source; the WMV export is a flattened rendered video.
  4. Choose the version-specific export command, such as File → Export or File → Export movie.
  5. Select Windows Media Video (WMV), choose an output name such as meeting.wmv, and select the required video and audio settings.
  6. Keep the original frame size when small interface text must remain readable. Retain the source frame rate unless file size is more important than motion quality. Lower frame size or bit rate reduces the file size but can make text, cursor details, and fine lines blurry.
  7. Start the export and play the WMV in the software that will receive it. Check image sharpness, audio presence, synchronization, and seeking; a file that opens in one player may still use a codec unavailable to the target application.

If WMV is not listed, install or update a BB FlashBack version with the required exporter. As a local fallback, export FBR to an intermediate format supported by the installed BB FlashBack edition, then encode that file with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i input.avi -c:v wmv2 -b:v 4M -c:a wmav2 -b:a 128k output.wmv

This fallback cannot recover information that was already lost in the intermediate export, and the target application may require a different Windows Media codec or bit rate.

Quality and compatibility limits

Export is a decoding and recompression step, not a container rename. Loss of sharpness is most visible in screen text, thin borders, and cursor details. The WMV file does not retain BB FlashBack’s editable timeline, annotations as separate objects, or other source-project controls.

Audio may be absent if the original recording did not capture it, if the export excludes the track, or if the selected WMV audio codec is incompatible with the target player. A Windows installation may be required because BB FlashBack’s export features and WMV codecs are not consistently available on macOS or Linux.

Online converters are generally unsuitable for direct FBR conversion: major services usually accept standard video containers rather than BB FlashBack’s proprietary source, and uploading a screen recording can disclose confidential desktop or meeting content. Use BB FlashBack locally; use an online converter only after producing a standard file such as AVI or MP4 and only when the service explicitly lists the required input and output formats.

Frequently asked questions

Will my FBR recording still be editable after converting to WMV?

No, converting FBR to WMV renders the recording as a conventional video and removes FBR-specific editing data. Annotations, cursor effects, and other elements may be permanently combined with the picture rather than remaining separately editable.

Does converting FBR to WMV reduce the recording quality?

It can, because WMV is rendered and may be recompressed using different video and audio settings. The result depends on the source resolution, frame rate, codec, and selected quality settings, so small screen text can become less clear if those settings are reduced.

Will the audio from my FBR recording be included in the WMV file?

Yes, if the FBR recording contains an audio track and the conversion preserves it. Missing or unsupported audio settings can produce a WMV with video but no sound.

Why are some FBR effects or recording features missing in my WMV?

WMV preserves the rendered video rather than the full FBR recording structure, so interactive features and unsupported overlays may not survive. Content that is visible during playback is generally flattened into the video frames.
