What the USM format is

USM is a proprietary container associated mainly with CRI Middleware's movie systems, including CRI Movie2. Game publishers use it for prerecorded cutscenes, menus, trailers, and other in-game video. You typically encounter .usm files inside extracted console or PC game data rather than from consumer cameras or standard desktop recording software.

A USM file may contain proprietary or game-specific video and audio streams, including CRI audio formats such as ADX or HCA. Some files are encrypted or interleaved in a way that prevents general-purpose players from decoding them directly, so a converter may need to unpack or decrypt the streams before encoding WMV.

What the WMV format is

WMV is Microsoft's Windows Media Video format, normally stored in an .wmv file and commonly paired with Windows Media Audio. It is supported by Windows Media Player and many Windows-oriented playback, presentation, and editing applications.

WMV can provide relatively small files at moderate resolutions and bitrates. It is most appropriate when the destination application specifically requests WMV or when compatibility with older Windows software matters; newer platforms generally provide better support for MP4 with H.264 video.

How to actually convert USM to WMV

Using the online converter

1. Open the USM-to-WMV converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .usm file and select WMV as the output format.
3. Start the conversion, then download the resulting .wmv file when processing finishes.
4. Test the output with Windows Media Player or the application that requires WMV. Large game files may take longer to upload and process, and encrypted USM files may not be accepted by every converter.

Using FFmpeg when the USM is readable

Install an FFmpeg build with USM demuxing support, place the source file in the working directory, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.usm -c:v wmv2 -b:v 2500k -c:a wmav2 -b:a 128k output.wmv

Use a different video bitrate for the source resolution: approximately 1000k–2000k for 480p, 2500k–5000k for 720p, and higher for 1080p. If the source has no audio stream, omit -c:a wmav2 -b:a 128k.

Check whether FFmpeg recognizes the streams before encoding:

ffprobe input.usm

If FFmpeg reports an unknown format, unsupported codec, or encryption, it cannot perform the conversion directly. Use a USM extraction or decryption utility appropriate to the game's CRI asset version, then convert the resulting video and audio streams separately or remux them into a playable intermediate file before running the WMV command.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Conversion does not restore quality lost in the original game asset. Encoding to WMV normally recompresses the video, so use a higher bitrate when preserving detail matters. Verify frame rate, aspect ratio, subtitles, and audio synchronization after conversion.

USM support varies substantially between tools because the extension identifies a container family rather than one universally decodable codec. A file can therefore fail conversion because it is encrypted, uses an unsupported CRI audio codec, or contains game-specific data even when other USM files convert successfully.

WMV output may use WMV2 video and WMAV2 audio, as in the FFmpeg command above. Some older applications require those codecs specifically; if the target program rejects the file, inspect its required WMV codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio settings rather than changing only the filename extension.
