Convert APK to WMV

A Windows application or legacy editor may require a .wmv video, while an APK is an Android application package, not a video file. To produce WMV from an app, run the APK on Android, record its displayed output, and encode that recording.

What the APK format is

APK is the installation package format used by Android. Android Studio, Gradle builds, and other Android development tools create APK files; users encounter them when installing apps outside Google Play or archiving application builds. An APK is a ZIP-based package containing executable code, resources, a manifest, and signing information. It is not a video stream or a media container that a video converter can decode.

An APK can contain video resources used by the app, but those files must be extracted and converted individually. Unzipping an APK does not convert the application or reproduce its live interface.

What the WMV format is

WMV usually means Windows Media Video, commonly stored in an ASF-based .wmv file. Its practical advantages are compatibility with older Windows software and the ability to produce moderate file sizes at supported bitrates. Modern players, editors, browsers, and mobile devices generally support H.264 video in an MP4 container more consistently, so WMV is appropriate mainly when the destination specifically requires it.

How to create a WMV recording

1. Run the APK in an Android Virtual Device created with Android Studio, or install it on a physical Android device. For a device connected through USB debugging, install it with adb install app.apk. Launch it with the application ID, for example adb shell monkey -p com.example.app 1.
2. Capture the running app. OBS Studio can record an Android Emulator window or a mirrored physical-device display; add a Window Capture source, choose the required resolution and frame rate, and start recording. Android Studio's emulator also provides screen-recording controls, and adb shell screenrecord can create a temporary MP4 capture, subject to Android's device- and version-specific limits.
3. Record to MKV in OBS when interruption recovery matters, then use File → Remux Recordings if an MP4 intermediate is required. Remove notifications, status bars, emulator controls, and other overlays before recording.
4. Encode the recording with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i recording.mkv -c:v wmv2 -b:v 5M -c:a wmav2 -b:a 192k output.wmv

This selects the WMV2 video encoder and Windows Media Audio 2. Adjust 5M for the required balance between detail and file size; 3–5 Mb/s is a starting range for 1280×720 screen content, while fast gameplay may need a higher bitrate. If the source has no audio, omit the audio options or use -an.

Shutter Encoder provides a graphical FFmpeg-based alternative: choose Convert, select a WMV-compatible container and codec when available, set the frame rate and bitrate, and start the conversion. Verify the selected codec because WMV output options vary by installed FFmpeg build.

Online conversion options

CloudConvert, Zamzar, and similar services can convert an existing MP4, MKV, or other supported recording to WMV. Upload the recording, select WMV as the output, set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate if the service exposes those controls, then download the result. These services cannot execute an APK or capture its screen. Do not upload APKs or recordings containing proprietary code, credentials, personal data, or confidential screens; local OBS and FFmpeg processing avoids that transfer.

Quality and compatibility limits

The output is a video recording, not a converted or playable version of the APK. It does not preserve touch input, application logic, interactive controls, menus that were not displayed, or detail beyond the device or emulator's screen resolution and frame rate. Capture at the dimensions and frame rate required by the target program, and test the resulting file in that exact program or device.

WMV encoding can alter colors, soften text, introduce motion artifacts, and remove transparency. Screen recordings should use a constant frame rate when the destination editor requires it. If the target does not mandate WMV, H.264 video in an MP4 container is normally easier to edit and more widely supported.
