Convert WRF to WMV

A Webex recording may need conversion when the receiving Windows application, older Microsoft workflow, or editor cannot open Cisco’s proprietary .wrf file. Exporting it to .wmv also makes playback easier on systems built around Windows Media.

What the WRF format is

WRF is Cisco Webex Recording Format, used mainly by Webex Recorder and older Webex Meetings desktop applications for locally saved meetings. A WRF recording can contain camera video, shared screens, audio, slides, and meeting activity.

WRF is proprietary rather than a general-purpose video format, so Windows Media Player, VLC, QuickTime, and generic converters may not open it reliably. Do not confuse it with Webex network recordings in .arf format; ARF files use a different player and conversion process.

What the WMV format is

WMV is Microsoft’s Windows Media Video codec family. A .wmv file normally uses the ASF container and may contain WMV video with WMA audio. WMV can provide relatively small files at moderate quality and remains useful with older Windows software, Windows Media Player installations, and applications that specifically request it.

WMV is less compatible than H.264/AAC in an .mp4 file for current browsers, phones, televisions, and cross-platform editors. Use WMV for a stated compatibility requirement; otherwise, MP4 is usually the better distribution format.

How to convert WRF to WMV

Use Cisco’s Windows Webex recording software first. Depending on the Webex release, the required export command is available in Webex Recording Editor or in the older Webex Player package. Obtain the compatible installer from your Webex administrator or Cisco’s official Webex downloads; older versions may not be available from current account pages.

1. Install the Webex recording application that supports the WRF file and open it.
2. Select File → Open and choose the .wrf recording.
3. Play enough of the recording to confirm that the required screen, camera, presentation, and audio content is present.
4. Select File → Convert → WMV. In versions that show an export dialog, choose the output location, video size, frame rate, audio settings, and a standard Windows Media profile.
5. Start the export and leave the application running until rendering finishes. This is a playback-based conversion and may take roughly as long as the recording.
6. Open the resulting .wmv in the intended player or editor. Check the start and end, audio synchronization, screen text, slides, and camera tracks before archiving or deleting the WRF source.

If the menu is missing, the installed Webex component may be a player without export support, or its version may not support that WRF recording. Try the matching Webex Recording Editor package rather than renaming the extension; changing .wrf to .wmv does not convert the data.

Fallback capture method

When Cisco’s converter cannot be installed, play the WRF in the compatible Webex Player and capture the playback with OBS Studio. Add the player window as a window-capture source, match the OBS canvas and output resolution to the source, enable system-audio capture, disable notifications, and record the entire playback.

OBS normally records to .mkv or .mp4, not directly to WMV. Transcode that recording with FFmpeg, for example:

Choose the video bitrate according to the source resolution and screen-text detail. This method runs in real time, captures only what is displayed, can include player controls or system sounds, and may reduce quality. It is a fallback, not an equivalent to Cisco’s native export.

Quality, privacy, and compatibility limits

Conversion cannot recover detail absent from the WRF source. Keep the source resolution and frame rate when possible; increasing output resolution only enlarges the file. Low bitrate or excessive resizing can make shared-screen text unreadable.

Use a standard WMV/ASF profile when the exporter offers profiles. Playback still depends on the target system’s installed codecs, and some modern macOS, browser, and mobile applications may not support WMV without additional software.

Reputable general-purpose online converters generally do not provide dependable WRF input support because WRF is proprietary. Services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar should be used only if their current format list explicitly accepts .wrf and produces .wmv; upload a recording only after checking retention and deletion terms. Local Cisco conversion avoids uploading potentially confidential meeting audio, video, and shared-screen content.
