Convert XSPF to WMV

Convert the videos referenced by an XSPF playlist into compatible WMV files.

A program or older device that accepts WMV but not XSPF requires the playlist's referenced videos to be converted individually. XSPF contains locations and metadata, not the video stream, so renaming or directly transcoding the playlist cannot produce a playable WMV file.

What the XSPF format is

XSPF (XML Shareable Playlist Format) is an XML playlist format used by media players such as VLC, foobar2000, and other software that supports portable playlists. An .xspf file can store playback order, titles, durations, creator information, and location values pointing to local files or network resources; it does not contain the encoded audio or video.

A location may look like file:///C:/Videos/clip.mp4, a platform-specific path, or an HTTP URL. The referenced files must still exist and be accessible. An XSPF playlist can contain audio, video, or both, so select only the video entries for a WMV conversion.

What the WMV format is

WMV (Windows Media Video) refers to Microsoft video codecs, commonly stored in an ASF container with the .wmv extension. WMV9, also known as Windows Media Video 9, and the older WMV2 codec are common encoding choices. WMV remains relevant for legacy Windows software, Windows Media Player workflows, and hardware that specifically lists WMV support.

WMV is not inherently smaller or higher quality than the source. Output size and quality depend mainly on the video codec, bitrate, dimensions, frame rate, and audio settings. Converting an already compressed video to WMV normally causes another generation of quality loss.

How to convert the referenced videos

Using VLC

  1. Open the .xspf file in VLC and inspect the playlist. Confirm which entries are local video files and test that each file opens. For a URL, download the media only when you have permission and the source permits it.
  2. For each video, choose Media → Convert/Save, select Add, choose the source file, and click Convert/Save.
  3. Select a WMV/ASF profile if the VLC installation provides one. If profile editing is available, use a WMV2 or WMV3 video codec and a compatible WMA audio codec, then set a destination ending in .wmv.
  4. Choose Start and repeat the process for each playlist entry. VLC normally creates separate WMV files; it does not automatically turn a multi-entry XSPF playlist into one combined video.

VLC's available WMV profiles vary by version and operating system. If no suitable profile appears, use FFmpeg or another desktop converter that explicitly offers WMV output rather than merely changing the filename extension.

Using FFmpeg

Read each location value from the XSPF XML, URL-decode it where necessary, and resolve relative paths against the playlist's directory. Then convert each accessible source file with a command such as:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v wmv2 -b:v 2M -c:a wmav2 -b:a 128k output.wmv

Replace input.mp4 with the referenced file. Adjust -b:v 2M for the source resolution and desired file size. Omit -c:a wmav2 -b:a 128k when the source has no audio. FFmpeg can decode and convert formats such as .mkv, .mov, and .webm when the installed build includes the required decoders.

For a single WMV containing several playlist entries, convert the clips to matching settings and then combine them with an FFmpeg concat filter while re-encoding. Direct stream concatenation is only dependable when every stream has compatible codecs, dimensions, frame rates, time bases, and audio parameters; separate output files are safer for mixed playlists.

Using an online converter

Services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar can convert individual uploaded video files to WMV when WMV is available as an output option. They generally cannot follow local paths inside an XSPF file, so uploading the playlist alone will not convert its media. Download or locate each source video first, upload it separately, select WMV, start the conversion, and download the result.

Online conversion requires uploading the media to a third party and may impose file-size, duration, queue, or retention limits. Use desktop software for private footage, large files, inaccessible network sources, or batch processing.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Missing, moved, protected, or inaccessible files cannot be converted merely because their paths appear in the XSPF file.
  • Relative paths, URI percent-encoding, Windows-versus-Unix path syntax, authentication, and network permissions can prevent a playlist entry from resolving. Verify every source in VLC or a file manager before batch conversion.
  • Choose the output bitrate according to the source resolution; increasing the bitrate cannot restore detail already lost in the source.
  • Target devices may support only particular WMV codecs, ASF variants, resolutions, frame rates, or audio codecs. WMV2 with WMA audio may suit some older devices, while others require WMV9 or a specific profile. Test a short output on the target hardware before converting the entire playlist.
  • Do not use a .wmv extension on an MP4 or other non-WMV file. The video and audio streams must be encoded and muxed in a compatible WMV/ASF output.

Simply put, it is impossible to convert XSPF to WMV directly.
Thus, there is no so-called xspf to wmv converter or a free online .xspf to .wmv conversion tool.
