How to convert swf to wmv file

  • Video

Legacy training systems, Windows media libraries, and older presentation software may accept WMV but cannot play Flash content. Converting a linear SWF animation or embedded video produces a file that can be played without Adobe Flash Player.

SWF format

SWF is the Adobe Flash file format used for web animations, advertisements, e-learning modules, games, and interactive applications. Flash developers and web publishers used SWF files to package vector graphics, bitmap images, audio, timeline animation, ActionScript code, and sometimes embedded video.

SWF is not inherently a conventional video format. A file may contain a fixed animation that can be rendered to video, or it may contain menus, buttons, forms, games, and scripts that require user input. Adobe ended Flash Player support on December 31, 2020, and Flash content is blocked by the discontinued player, making conversion useful for linear material that must remain viewable.

WMV format

WMV is a Microsoft video format normally stored in an Advanced Systems Format container with the .wmv extension. It is commonly supported by Windows Media Player and legacy Windows-based media, presentation, and corporate video systems.

WMV can deliver relatively small files at modest bitrates and remains appropriate when a recipient or application specifically requires it. It is less suitable as a general modern delivery format: MP4 with H.264 is usually supported by more current browsers, mobile devices, televisions, and editing applications.

Convert a linear SWF file

  1. Confirm that the SWF contains a linear animation or video. If it has navigation controls or multiple scenes, decide which playback path must be recorded before conversion.
  2. Upload the .swf file to the free converter on 101convert.com.
  3. Select WMV as the output format, start the conversion, then download the completed file.
  4. Open the WMV in the target Windows application or player and check its duration, image size, audio, and synchronization before distributing it.

Use the original SWF rather than a previously converted video whenever possible. Each lossy video re-encode can add compression artifacts.

Handling interactive or unsupported SWF files

An online conversion process can convert only content it can decode and render. It cannot preserve ActionScript, clickable controls, forms, hyperlinks, score data, or game logic. If the file depends on interaction, run it in a compatible Flash authoring or playback environment, select the required sequence, and capture or export that sequence as a standard video master before encoding it to WMV.

SWF files can also rely on external images, XML data, video, fonts, or network resources. Keep local companion files in their expected folders when rendering the SWF on a desktop system. Content retrieved from obsolete web addresses may no longer be available.

Desktop encoding option

After rendering or capturing the desired sequence to a standard video file such as input.mp4, FFmpeg can create a broadly compatible older WMV variant:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v wmv2 -b:v 2500k -c:a wmav2 -b:a 128k output.wmv

This command writes WMV2 video and WMA v2 audio in a WMV-compatible ASF file. WMV2 is useful for older Windows playback, but a receiving system that explicitly requires WMV 9 may need a different encoder or preset. Test the resulting file in the required application rather than relying on the .wmv extension alone.

Quality and compatibility limits

Vector artwork in an SWF must be rasterized into video frames. Export at the intended display dimensions; enlarging a 640×480 animation to 1920×1080 increases file size without restoring missing detail.

Keep the original frame rate where possible, commonly 24, 25, or 30 fps. Changing frame rate can make timeline animation uneven, and reducing 60 fps material to 30 fps discards motion samples.

Retain the original .swf alongside the WMV if preservation matters. The WMV contains only rendered audio and video, not the editable vector assets, scripts, or interactivity of the Flash file.
