How to convert swf to wave file

  • Video

Legacy Flash games, training modules, and presentations may contain sound that must be edited in a DAW, added to a video project, or played by software that accepts WAV files. The conversion extracts decodable audio from the SWF; it does not retain animation, ActionScript, or interactive controls.

SWF format

SWF is the compiled Adobe Flash format, historically used for browser animations, games, advertisements, e-learning content, and interactive presentations. Flash authoring tools, including Adobe Animate (formerly Flash Professional), produced SWF files containing vector graphics, timeline data, scripts, video, fonts, and sound.

An .swf file can contain a continuous soundtrack synchronized with its timeline, separate sound effects triggered by events, or references to audio downloaded while the Flash project runs. It may therefore contain no audio, one continuous stream, or multiple independent sound assets.

WAVE format

WAVE, normally using the .wav extension, is a RIFF-based audio container. WAV commonly stores uncompressed PCM audio, a format supported by audio editors, DAWs, video editors, Windows applications, and many playback devices.

PCM WAV is appropriate for editing and interchange because it avoids another lossy encoding step. The trade-off is size: one minute of stereo, 16-bit, 48 kHz PCM audio occupies about 11.5 MB.

Convert an SWF to WAVE

Use the converter on 101convert.com to convert the SWF without installing software. Upload the .swf file, select WAVE or WAV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. The service can extract only audio embedded in the uploaded SWF; audio loaded from a remote URL during playback is not present in the file.

If an output setting is available, select PCM WAV. Keep the source sample rate and channel count unless the receiving program or device specifies another requirement. Use 48 kHz for most video workflows and 44.1 kHz only when required by a music-oriented destination.

Extracting audio locally

FFmpeg can extract audio when it recognizes an audio stream in the SWF. Inspect the input first:

ffprobe -hide_banner input.swf

To decode the first recognized audio stream to 16-bit PCM WAV:

ffmpeg -i input.swf -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav

To create stereo 48 kHz PCM output for a video editor or device:

ffmpeg -i input.swf -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a pcm_s16le -ar 48000 -ac 2 output.wav

Some SWF files store sounds as Flash sound tags rather than a conventional media stream. In that case, JPEXS Free Flash Decompiler can inspect the SWF's sound entries and export selected assets. This is useful when the file contains separate effects, voice clips, and music instead of one final soundtrack.

Quality and compatibility limits

SWF audio may use MP3, ADPCM, Nellymoser, or Speex compression. Decoding it to PCM WAV improves compatibility but does not restore detail lost by the original compression.

A timeline soundtrack can export as one continuous WAV, while event-triggered sounds may need to be exported individually. Audio generated by ActionScript, assembled only during interactive playback, loaded externally, or protected by DRM cannot be reliably recovered from the SWF alone.

Standard RIFF/WAV uses 32-bit size fields and is limited to roughly 4 GB. Split very long PCM exports if the destination application does not support RF64 or another large-file audio format.
