How to convert swf to mp4 file

  • Video

Legacy training modules, animations, and video clips saved as SWF no longer run in current browsers because Flash Player was discontinued. Converting a playable SWF to MP4 produces a standard video file for media players, editors, presentations, and archiving.

SWF format

SWF is the Adobe Flash file format, historically called Shockwave Flash. It was used on websites and in e-learning, advertisements, presentations, games, and software interfaces; Adobe Flash Professional, now Adobe Animate, was a common authoring application.

An SWF may contain vector graphics, bitmap images, fonts, audio, timeline animation, embedded video, and ActionScript code. It is therefore not necessarily a video file. Buttons, quizzes, keyboard input, branching paths, saved data, and other scripted behavior cannot be retained in an MP4.

Some SWF files depend on images, audio, XML data, or video loaded from a URL or a local folder. Converting the .swf file alone may produce incomplete output if those external resources are unavailable.

MP4 format

MP4 is an ISO Base Media File Format container that can hold video, audio, subtitles, and metadata. For broad playback compatibility, an MP4 normally uses H.264 video and AAC audio; H.265/HEVC can reduce file size but has less consistent support in older devices and software.

MP4 plays in current browsers, phones, TVs, media players, and video editors without a Flash runtime. The conversion creates a fixed, linear recording rather than a scalable and interactive Flash application.

Convert a playable SWF to MP4

  1. Open the SWF-to-MP4 converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select the source .swf file.
  3. Confirm MP4 as the output format and start conversion.
  4. Download the resulting .mp4 file.
  5. Check the MP4 in a current browser, VLC, or the intended target device before removing the original SWF.

The file can be converted on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Renaming file.swf to file.mp4 does not convert its video, audio, or Flash timeline.

For an SWF that contains directly decodable embedded video rather than a rendered animation, FFmpeg can sometimes create an MP4 locally:

ffmpeg -i input.swf -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart output.mp4

-pix_fmt yuv420p improves H.264 playback compatibility, while -crf 18 targets high quality; increasing the CRF value, such as to 23, reduces file size at the cost of quality. FFmpeg does not emulate the Flash runtime and cannot reliably render ActionScript-driven SWFs, interactive content, or assets loaded dynamically.

Quality and compatibility limits

Flash vector animation is rasterized during conversion. Choose an output resolution at least as large as the intended playback size, because enlarging the finished MP4 cannot recover detail.

Preserve the original frame rate where possible. Converting 24 fps or 30 fps animation to a different rate can introduce repeated frames, uneven motion, or timing changes.

Script-heavy, encrypted, damaged, or unsupported SWFs may need to be played in a compatible Flash emulator or legacy runtime and captured with desktop recording software such as OBS Studio. This is a fallback, not a lossless conversion: test for missing fonts, silent audio, blank scenes, incorrect timing, and absent external assets.

Keep the original SWF and its associated files. The MP4 is suitable for viewing and distribution, but it cannot restore interactivity or serve as an editable replacement for the original Flash project.
