How to convert approj to mp4 file

  • Video

Phones, browsers, video platforms, and most media players cannot open an editable .approj project directly. Exporting it from ActivePresenter creates a single .mp4 video for playback, sharing, upload, or archiving.

What the APPROJ format is

.approj is ActivePresenter’s native project format. ActivePresenter is used for screen recordings, software demonstrations, presentations, tutorials, and e-learning content on supported desktop operating systems.

An APPROJ project can contain slides, recordings, imported images and video, audio, captions, annotations, cursor effects, transitions, and timeline or presentation settings. It is an editable project, not a conventional video stream, so changing the filename extension cannot convert it. Open it in ActivePresenter, preferably the same release or a newer compatible release.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container supported by web browsers, phones, televisions, video editors, and common media players. ActivePresenter’s video export normally uses H.264 for video and AAC for audio, a combination that provides broad compatibility and considerably smaller files than uncompressed video.

MP4 is suitable when recipients do not have ActivePresenter or when you need one linear playback file. It does not preserve the editable project structure or interactive presentation behavior.

How to export the project as MP4

  1. Install and open ActivePresenter, then choose File → Open and select the .approj file.
  2. Resolve any missing recordings, images, audio, fonts, or other external assets before exporting. Do not move or delete source files referenced by the project.
  3. Review the slides and timeline. Check narration, audio levels, slide durations, captions, cursor effects, transitions, and the final playback order.
  4. Open ActivePresenter’s video export command. Depending on the version, use the Export tab and choose Video, or use File → Export → Video.
  5. Choose MP4 and, when the encoder settings are available, select H.264 video with AAC audio.
  6. Keep the original project dimensions and recorded frame rate unless you specifically need a smaller file. Downscaling screen recordings can make menus and small text difficult to read.
  7. Choose an output folder and filename ending in .mp4, then start the export. ActivePresenter renders the slides, media, narration, and timeline effects into a linear video.
  8. Open the result in VLC or another independent player and check synchronization, text readability, transitions, audio, and duration.

When a second conversion is needed

ActivePresenter’s MP4 export is normally sufficient. If a device or service rejects the rendered file because of its codec, profile, frame rate, or size, re-encode the already-rendered video with HandBrake. Open the video, choose an MP4 H.264 preset such as Fast 1080p30, select AAC audio, preserve the source dimensions when possible, and click Start Encode.

FFmpeg can perform the same step from a command line:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4

Re-encoding can reduce quality, so avoid it unless the destination requires different settings. Do not use a generic converter to open the APPROJ file itself; such services generally do not understand ActivePresenter project data.

Online converters and privacy

Online services such as CloudConvert may re-encode an already exported video, but they generally do not convert .approj directly. First export locally from ActivePresenter, then upload the resulting video only if an online service is necessary for a codec, size, or delivery requirement.

Uploading may expose recordings, narration, course material, or other embedded content. Local ActivePresenter export is the appropriate choice for confidential projects and avoids upload limits and service-specific retention policies.

Quality and compatibility limits

MP4 removes the editable timeline, individual objects, slide structure, project annotations, and ActivePresenter editing controls. Buttons, branching navigation, quizzes, hover behavior, and other interactive features cannot remain functional in an ordinary linear MP4; publish an interactive or HTML5 output instead when those features are required.

Missing external assets can produce incomplete slides or placeholders. Export at the original resolution, inspect small interface text after rendering, and adjust bitrate or resolution only after testing the result on the intended device.

Frequently asked questions

Will my ActivePresenter project remain editable after converting APPROJ to MP4?

No. The APPROJ timeline, slides, objects, and editing structure are rendered into a single video, so the MP4 is not a replacement for the editable project.

Are quizzes, buttons, and click interactions preserved in APPROJ to MP4 conversion?

No. MP4 contains linear video and audio, so quizzes, clickable buttons, branching actions, and other interactive behaviour are flattened or lost.

What affects the quality of an APPROJ to MP4 export?

The output resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate affect sharpness, smoothness, and compression quality. Text and screen recordings can look blurry if the export resolution is lower than the project content or the bitrate is too low.

Why do transparent elements look different in the MP4?

MP4 normally does not preserve transparency, so transparent objects are rendered against the project background during export. The result may also be smaller than the project because it contains compressed playback video rather than editable source assets.
